                         KEEP THE DREAM ALIVE

Osman & Taylor dream of winning a US National Championship in ballroom dance, then representing the US in World Competition. They are well on their way, winning competitions and hearts of ballroom entheusiasts. But recently financial challenges are holding them back, by limiting their access to adequate amounts of high level training and their ability to travel to national competions. Presently they have qualified for USA Nationals in Baltimore, MD,  but may need help to get there. Please consider helping these deserving youngsters along their way.

Osman Torres is a senior at Jesuit High in New Orleans, where he is a football player and an honor roll student. He was introduced to ballroom dance in 5th grade through an outreach program of USA Dance called Dancing Schools. He is the son of Osman Torres, Sr. and Ondina Torres, of Kenner, LA,  originally from Honduras.

Taylor Schoen is a 10th grade honor student at Runnels High School in Baton Rouge. She has done one form of dance or another since she was three, but fell in love with ballroom dance when she had a chance encounter with instructor and studio owner, Ric Seeling, when she was 13. Taylor is the daughter of Tom and LaTefy Schoen of Baton Rouge.

Osman and Taylor have been dancing together and competing for two years. They have done very well together, winning several regional competitions. Numerous experts and past US and World Champions have indicated that these kids have the raw talent to succeed in ballroom dance.

However, reaching their lofty goals will take a great deal of training. We are seeking the help of friends who believe in them and want to see these outstanding, dedicated and talented young people reach their dreams. Any donation you could make will go towards training or competition related expenses. For a breakdown of what some of these are please see our wish list.

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED!
We went to USA Nationals this year > and we won!

Since we came home there has been a whirlwind of activity. The many congratulations from friends and family have been heartwarming. The local press coverage has been wonderful. Jesuit High School published an article http://www.jesuitnola.org/2015/04/14/senior-football-star-osman-torres-tackles-other-passion-wins-national-dance-competition/

The Winter 2015 USA Dance Gumbo Chapter Newsletter carried an article (See pages 4 and 11
http://usadancegumbo.org/files/usa-dance-la-gumbo-chapter-5031/articles_v1_00/articles-of-interest/winter-2015-footnotes-newsletter.pdf ).
The Advocate newspaper in Baton Rouge published an article on Friday April 17, 2015, page 2D (See: http://theadvocate.com/features/people/12076408-123/community-news-april-17-2015).
Then NOLA.com, the online version of the New Orleans Times Picayune, published a very extensive story with several pictures, and multiple video links, see http://blog.nola.com/eastjefferson/2015/04/jesuit_football_player_fromke.html

NEW GOAL: WORLD TEAM
The couple has big dreams for the future. They want to earn a spot on the USA World Team. This will take much hard work, but they are determined to give it their best shot, even if it is a multi-year endeavor.

For now, they are focusing on school because Osman underwent shoulder surgery after returning from Nationals and is recovering (see Jesuit article for details). In May he moves to Baton Rouge to go to LSU. This is very exciting because for the first time they will reside in the same city, facilitating easier training and practices.

They will be back on the competition circuit as soon as his shoulders are ready; that could be as early as June for the home NQE, The Gumbo of Ballroom (See https://usadancegumbo.org ) or as late as the beginning of 2016, since he has one more surgery to go.

Moving forward Osman and Taylor will focus on mastering international styles of dance. It is their dream to one day earn a spot on the USA World Team. This is the group that represents the US in prestigious international competitions such as The World Games, and hopefully one day, The Olympic Games.

For more on progress toward inclusion of Dancesport in the Olympics see:
http://usadance.org/news/news-and-press/help-our-athletes--donate-to-usa-dance-world-team-athlete-development-fund/

This will take lots of training and dedication, but two different officials at nationals felt like this was a reasonable aspiration for the partnership. So for now, they start back with footwork only and focus on technique in new international dances. As soon as Osman's shoulders are ready they will begin an intensive training regimen in preparation for the 2016 Dancesport Competition Season.

THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT!!
