Christina's Fund for TNKR

TNKR or Teaching North Korean Refugees is a non-political, non-religious, humanitarian organization that supports adults who have escaped North Korea. The primary focus of TNKR is to provide refugees with more options in determining their places in society and preparing for the future. They come with different motivations, such as studying abroad, being able to communicate with co-workers or attaining a job. TNKR runs several programs which help develop English language skills, such as 1:1 tutoring, where refugees can freely pursue their individual learning goals.

I became a part of TNKR after searching for volunteer opportunities as an English teacher in Seoul, South Korea. In my last semester of college, I ended up taking a class called “Gender and Social Change in Korea” taught by Professor Suzy Kim. It was a last minute decision that quickly turned into a wake up call of lectures and in-class discussions. Professor Kim and my peers (cannot thank you enough) dramatically shifted my perception of society and my position as a comfortable and privileged Korean-American. More importantly, this shift resulted in an awareness of the harsh realities that North Korean refugees face after defecting to South Korea.

Twice a month, I tutor refugees for 2-3 hours, covering anything from pronunciation, numbers to interview questions. I, as well as my fellow volunteers, believe that our work is not only purposeful but we see with our own eyes that it makes a difference. TNKR has produced exceptional writers, speakers, students, professionals and ambassadors.This movement is happening all throughout Seoul everyday, with volunteers coming from as far as Jeju-do to tutor willing, capable and ambitious students. Everything - transportation, meeting places (study rooms, cafes), materials, and resources – is paid out of pocket by students and teachers. The TNKR office is also run by donations - we would eventually like to establish a set space to meet and use freely. 

TNKR has quickly become an organization, a mission and a movement that I hold very close to my heart. I would like to ask for your support in 1. bringing awareness to this organization and 2. donating money to keep it running. 안녕하세요 가족 그리고 친구 여러분! 혹시 저를 모르시는 분들을 위해서 자기 소개를 할게요. 저는 대한민국, 서울에서 영어를 가르치는 원어민 선생님 입니다. 탈북 자들을 위한 TNKR은 최근들어 제가 매우 관심 있는 단체입니다. 한달에 2번, 약 2-3시간을 영어발음, 숫자, 인터뷰 문제 등을 가르쳐 주는 봉사활동을 하고 있는데요. TNKR의 목적은 탈북자들을 한국 사회에 정착하도록 도와주는 것입니다. 열정적인 한국 봉사자분들이 매주 모여, 열심히 배우고 싶어하는 동포분들에게 영어를 가르쳐 주고 있습니다. 하지만, 그 외의 교통, 강의실, 수업재료 등은 사비로 지불되고 있습니다. Ciao amici e familiari! Per quelli che non lo sapessero al momento sto lavorando come insegnante a Seoul, nella Corea del Sud.

(TKNR) Teach North Korean Refugees è un'organizzazione di cui sono recentemente entrata a far parte con una missione che sento davvero vicina al mio cuore. Due volte al mese faccio da tutor per i rifugiati della Corea del Nord per 2-3 ore, facendo tutto dalla pronuncia, ai numeri, a domande di intervista. Lo scopo di TKNR è quello di assistere i rifugiati nel trovare il loro posto nella società. Volontari appassionati e desiderosi da tutta la Corea del Sud si incontrano ogni settimana, ambizioso studenti per insegnare l'inglese. Tutto quanto - dai trasporti alle aule studio, risorse e materiali - è pagato di tasca propria. TKNR non riceve fondi dal governo.

Sto cominciando questo fondo per raccogliere soldi per far andare avanti TKNR perchè 1. Ognuno merita l'opportunità di imparare e 2.
