If you haven’t seen her, you’ve definitely heard her. Loud of voice and big in heart is the best way to describe our beloved crossing guard, Nancy Jordan.
As with all crossing guards, Nancy puts her life on the line for our kids every day, dodging cars in the blazing heat, the morning cold or the pouring rain. But through all this – and even on nice days – Nancy always has a big smile, a kind word and a devotion to the families of Lanai that is unequaled.
But how many of us know what’s really going on in the lives of the people we come in contact with every day? How many of us know that replacing a tire on a car might mean not being able to pay its registration; or that missing work to go to the doctor might mean the rent being late?
Crossing guards are considered part-time, and compensation is only paid for hours worked. The current rate of pay is $17.25 per hour, and the average workday is only 3½ hours. While Nancy has been offered office jobs in the department, she loves her Lanai family too much to leave.
Most of our families at Lanai live very comfortable lives. A small donation (or even a large one) to this drive might not put a dent in your wallet, but could provide a financial cushion to make Nancy’s life a little easier.
