Since 2008 TJX has been working in 12 communities in the remote Rwenzori region of Western Uganda developing sustainable trade. The communities are mountainous and remote. War, famine and political unrest have meant an entire generation has missed out on education. Initially TJX raised money to build classrooms and teacher’s houses, supply educational materials and clean water and toilets.

TJX's aim is to help parents ensure their children complete their primary education. Working with 6000 families, the Sustainable Trade Project was developed in 2011 to enable parents to increase their incomes so they can afford to send their children to school. TJX's Sustainable Trade Project helps local people to generate an increased income by supporting them to produce better quality and higher yields on a range of fabulous products including coffee, cocoa, cotton and beautiful traditional crafts.  In turn this helps parents to raise their incomes and improve the life chances of the children who live there.

We want to leave a legacy for the Uganda communities that we have been supporting since 2008. The aim is to purchase a “Forever Home” Trade Centre so that the communities can continue trading and expand their clientele. It will be a custom built and safe place for the workers to train, pack orders, hold meetings and all activities which will enable them to continue trading successfully. The trade centre helps local people to generate an increased income which in turn helps parents to ensure their child goes to school.
