Greenhouse Gas Reduction in Africa

Donation protected
Most Ghanaians depend on biomass sources, particularly wood fuels and charcoal for their household energy needs. Ghana government statistics indicates that  the consumption of biomass fuels is slighly more than 60% of total energy consumption of the 26.4 million population in the country.

Biomass as an energy source contains three greenhouse gases that are regulated under Kyoto: carbon dioxide; methane & nitrous oxide. For residential consumption of biomass emission factor (g/kg fuel) is as follows: CO2 (1500); CH4 (15) & nitrous oxide (0.16).

With these emission factors from domestic energy sources (conventional stoves); the purpose of this fundraising is to introduce the concept of net-zero houses in Ghana. A net-zero house is a house that generates on-site renewable energy and uses the same amount it generates. This type of a house can be completely off-grid.

The funds is to construct a demonstrational (see photo) net-zero house.

Situated directly under the equator, there is an abundance of sunlight to be captured for an on-site generation. The site for this demonstrational net-zero house will be in Accra- capital of Ghana. The land has has already been purchased.

The funds raised will be used for purchasing solar panels, invertor, battery storage together with the general building materials (wood, cement, roofing sheets, etc). Part of the funds will be used to hire an energy modelling consultant from North America, to model a net zero house suitable for the climatic conditions in Accra-Ghana. Modelling exercises are schedule to commence in October of 2016. Construction using local labour will begin in Jan. 2017.

As a Ghanaian-born Canadian, this project is my contribution to address the current energy crisis the country faces. Erractic power supply has been on-going for the last couple of years in the whole country. Yet, there is an abundance of sunlight per year. This demonstrational net-zero house is intended to shift the paradigm from fossil fuel based energy/power to renewable energy (particluary solar).  This project is purposed to make a statement that renewable energy is the way to address Ghana's desparate energy crisis.

Once completed, the house will serve as an educational centre, providing tours and hands-on demonstration of the viability of net zero energy houses in Ghana. A huge monitoring dashboard will be on display inside the house to track the home's carbon foot print and energy consumption.

Every donation for this project is a contribution  towards a global reduction in greeenhouse gases emissions and its resultant impact of addressing global warming/climate change.

Thank you for your generousity!
