Community Advocacy and Healing Project is a 501 c (3) cultivating culturally mindful healing, healing and human centered policy reform and experience.  We have an initiative rooted in culturally proficient and healing as a remedy to natural or human made disasters for people of the global majority (replaces the term people of color) and communities systematically ostracized and oppressed (womayn, children, people able differently, people aging, people of the rainbow village) called Community Restoration Project (CRP). CRP aids in facilitating access to culturally proficient and trauma centered healing opportunities, resources, information, services, and supplies prior, during, and after natural or human created  disasters, or any other unprecedented weather conditions negatively affecting communities. CRP was created because of the mistreatment of people of the global majority during the past natural disasters such as Hurricane Katrina, and/or the poisoning of water like in Flint, Michigan.

Recently Hurricane Dorian hit theBahamas  killing thousands and leaving even more homeless. Many people are experiencing loss and mental health concerns, as a result of the traumatic event. It is important to recognize that everyone responds to traumatic events, such as a hurricane, differently. The recovery process for some people may be immediate, while others may not begin to process the event until months or possibly years later. We understand that people will move at their own pace to pick up the pieces after a large-scale natural disaster, and we would like to assist bring culturally mindful resources to the Bahamas for people’s recovery process.  We are raising funds to provide culturally mindful resources and supplies to aid people during their recovery process.

We have learned that the symptoms following a traumatic event can be physical or emotional that emerge from the sudden shock of such an overwhelming natural disaster. The responses people may have are called traumatic stress reactions. Physically, the symptoms may present as headaches, fatigue, sweating or being easily startled. Emotionally, someone may have feelings of fear, anger, guilt, anxiety, numbness, hopelessness, or helplessness. Over time, stress reactions could develop into Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), which includes more intrusive symptoms with more intense feelings of fear that can last more than a month and hinder daily life. We recognize traumatic stress and find ways to cope with it or seek professional help to avoid symptoms worsening as the time after the hurricane continues on.

We understand there are hundreds of people in need of resources for people who watched homes  get blown and washed away, the process of looking for emergency accommodation and then returning to the neighborhood to commence the rebuilding process can be a source of chronic trauma in itself. People are forced to know that the place that was once a place of family and community is now reduced to debris and rubble which can make it difficult for survivors to put their grief and loss behind them and focus on moving forward. We are working to provide resources in the heart of communities impacted in this manner. You’re donations will directly to purchasing supplies and getting people trained to assist people emotionally and mentally contribute  boost personal resilience. We are focused on aiding people with low socioeconomic status, prior traumas, poor education and the lack of a support network which all contribute to increasing the risk of developing PTSD.
