Coalition against LA Fitness Project

We are neighbors who have come together to postpone the development of a 37,000 square foot building
(LA Fitness) in the Shops at Rossmoor behind Sprouts. This giant building will have vast impacts on thousands
of residents, including emergency services, traffic, environmental, noise, and most importantly SAFETY issues for thousands of residents, including children and the elderly who use these roads.  We are asking for donations from our neighbors in Seal Beach, Los Alamitos, Rossmoor, and beyond to fund legal representation so we may stop their second attempt at refiling a “new” application for the LA Fitness
project. We believed that we had stopped the project in July. However, our previous efforts and attempts
resulted in the project moving forward due to their sneaky tactics of filing under a new application. The
committee will continue to meet and work the issues. We will inform the public of the process….via social
media, news outlets, and local organizations who serve the citizens.  ANY donation amount will be appreciated!  We need the funds immediately to first address the parking situation that will affect all of the North Seal Beach and Rossmoor residents.  Then we will need additional funds to obtain legal counsel to ensure the safety of all residents and that the property values of Seal Beach, Rossmoor, and Los Alamitos don’t lessen due to the negative impact of the LA Fitness project.  Your donation will be protecting numerous neighbors against the addition of thousands of cars going through our neighborhood and adding more congestion on the major boulevards.  Your donation will also be putting a halt on a building that will be noisy and open 20 hours a day.  Most importantly, emergency responders will be able to get to people in need quickly, and our residents will be able to walk to school, sports practice, scouts, church, the library and parks SAFELY.

Thank you, in advance, for your help and please spread the word!

Please donate and share this Go Fund Me effort.

WE Won !!!!

Thank you, thank you, thank you to everyone in the community that has helped with our fight!

It took a village and we did it!!!

The LA Fitness project proposal was denied in a 3 in favor of denying the CUP and 2 opposing against votes.

The Seal Beach City Council in the early hours of the morning around 1:30 AM voted 3 in favor and 2 against denying the Coalition's appeal of the EIR, this upholding the Planning Commission's decision to certify the EIR. However, they also voted 3/2 to deny the developer's appeal of the Planning Commission's decision to deny the CUP which effectively denies the project.

Even though the EIR is certified there is no project to go along with it. The denial of the CUP by the City Council effectively kills the project and will not allow the developer to bring back the same project for at least one year.

We also found out last night that due to the negative information that was brought out, the LA Fitness retracted their plan to be in the Shops at Rossmoor. They corporately decided they didn't want the negative press. Our letter writing, speaking at meetings, and phone calls really did make a difference.

Thank you all again!

SAY NO TO LA FITNESS! OUR LAST CHANCE IS TONIGHT! Seal Beach City Council Meeting 7pm 211 8th Street Downtown Seal Beach
ALL HANDS ON DECK! IT'S GO TIME!

The meeting is at 7:00 pm, September 11th at Seal Beach City Hall
211 8th Street
Downtown Seal Beach

Don't assume that there's going to be a lot of people at the meeting and that you don't have to show up. SHOW UP and make a DIFFERENCE in your community. We need your support!!! If we don't have people there, we can LOSE our battle.

We want to remind everyone that we need to be cordial, respectful, and nice. We should not be showing anger.

Even if we don't agree with what they are saying, we will have our time to disagree with them when they are finished.

After the developers/LA Fitness have 30 minutes to speak, the Coalition against LA Fitness will ALSO have 30 minutes to speak(which is different than the June 27th, Planning Commission Meeting. After those 2 entities speak, then anyone that wants to speak for or against it can get up and speak for 3 minutes.

Please bring your yard signs to show opposition, then they know where you stand on the issue.

We will be passing out glow sticks to everyone who is against the project, so everyone will know how many people are against it.

Talk to your neighbors/friends/relatives and ask them to come. We have ONE chance to make our stand and Monday is it. We will have a public time to speak. Please come and speak about the personal reasons the project is not a good fit. We need residents of ALL areas of Seal Beach, and other surrounding are to SHOW UP!

Hello Fellow Coalition Members,

Here is the latest update on our fight against the LA Fitness and how YOU can help.

The time is NOW - The next city council meeting is scheduled for this coming Monday 9/11/17 @ 7pm, less than a week away. If you want to get a seat, you will need to show up early. Make sure to bring a friend. Let's show the city council how much we disapprove of this project.

We know we have made tremendous progress in the last 8 months, especially with our small half victory on June 27th. However, we don't want to lose the war because we think we have won half of the first battle. We have more battles to fight.

You can help by:

1. Printing out the attached petition sheet and going into Seal Beach to get people to sign the petition. If they have already signed one, please DO NOT have them sign again.

2. Tell everyone to leave their yard signs up, as we have not won the fight yet.

3. Ask Seal Beach residents if they would like a yard sign. If they do, we can provide them with one.

4. When the time comes to attend the BIG City Council meeting (September 11th), we need to be out there with huge force, hopefully even crowding into the street.

5. If you live in Seal Beach, please write to your specific council person and let them know you are opposed to the project and encourage them to vote in opposition, as well.

We really need to FOCUS on SEAL BEACH.

Please read the status below:

The Environmental Impact Report was approved/certified with a 3-2 vote (Machen, Thomas and Klinger voted for the project.)

The Conditional Use Permit was denied with a 3-2 vote (Machen, Aguilar and Campbell voted against)

The outcome of the meeting on July 17 was developer appeal of the decision adopted by the Planning Commission, so we have to plead our case again to the city council on 9/11. Make sure to show up to this meeting to show your disapproval of this project.

Thank you for your care and concern with with keeping the small town feel of our community. See you on the 11th - Thank you!

Hello Fellow Coalition Members,

Here is the latest update on our fight against the LA Fitness and how YOU can help.

We know we have made tremendous progress in the last 6 months, especially with our small half victory on June 27th. However, we don't want to lose the war because we think we have won half of the first battle. We have more battles to fight.

You can help by:

1. Printing out the attached petition sheet and going into Seal Beach to get people to sign a petition. If they have already signed one, please DO NOT have them sign again.

3. Ask Seal Beach residents if they would like a yard sign. If they do, we can provide them with one.

4. When the time comes to attend the BIG City Council meeting (possibly sometime in August), we need to be out there with huge force, hopefully even crowding into the street.

5. If you live in Seal Beach, please write to your specific council person and let them know you are opposed to the project and encourage them to vote in opposition, as well.

We really need to FOCUS on SEAL BEACH.

Since the Planning Commission was only provided with a resolution to approve the CUP, the Commission had to direct staff to prepare a new resolution denying the CUP. This item will be brought back to the Commission on July 17 to formalize the denial by adopting the resolution.

No action or attendance is required on our part for this to happen nor will their be any public comment on this item at that time. However, we should have some people in attendance at this meeting. The City Council meeting this last Monday, July 10th had one person speaking in favor of the LA Fitness and no one in opposition. Probably a good idea to still have people going to Monday night meetings down at City Hall to counteract anyone speaking in favor.

There are three possible outcomes once the Conditional Use Permit (CUP) resolution is adopted on July 17.

1) The developer can appeal that decision after it is adopted by the Commission on July 17. It will then be scheduled to City Council hopefully sometime in August. This course of action is very probable. We still do not know if an appeal has been filed by the developer. We, the Coalition, have already filed for an appeal against the Planning Commission's decision to approve the Environmental Impact Report.

2) The developer does not appeal the decision to City Council, then the project is dead.

3) The developer withdraws their application prior to July 17 and makes another attempt in the future. This course of action is highly unlikely.

What an impressive presentation, based on an even more impressive body of research, the Coalition team gave at the SB Planning Meeting. Thank you!

If this anything like the 24 hour fitness on Katella. Good luck because that place is disgustingly dirty. Many homeless people use the facility to shower and hang around.
