Coach Ron Guitard Medical Fund
Hello to all our Friends, Family and Mountain bike Riders from Eastlake HS and Middle School,
I'm on the mend after the heart attack on January 1st. I was pretty fortunate to have been stopped at a light when my attack happened. I fell over and complained about my aching left side then went into the "fish out of water" mode. Meaning, I was gasping for air every 20 seconds when one of the other riders, who's been a EMT for over 20 years, went into action. He gave me CPR for over 6-7 minutes. When the ambulance showed up they immediately shocked me twice! Then it was into surgery to place a stent in one artery and then they slid a mini balloon in another artery and broke the plaque that was built up. Then into a coma for 2 days. I was on all kinds of machines helping me breath and IV's to feed me and keep the drugs coming in. My wife, Liliana, told me that I woke up on the third day and starting speaking in Spanish and acted like it was a conspiracy that I was there and they (I don't know who) were trying to kill me. Back to sleep for another day and then I started to listen to Lili a little more but kept saying "seriously" after she would tell me what happened...then I would ask the same questions over again and respond with "seriously" like I didn't believe her! If you've ever seen the movie Ground Hog Day, you'll know what I was going through. Finally, after many visitors I didn't even know had been there I started to come out my fog and remember walking through the hallways wondering who we were visiting!?! Then it dawned on me that the IV pole I was dragging around while wearing my hospital pajamas was for me and that I was the patient! This time my brain absorbed all the information about the heart attack. The nurses, doctors and all other staff members were great at Scripps. Of course, my sternum is still sore, yes, even 3 weeks after the cpr BUT I'm alive. I'm taking some medication to make sure all goes smoothly and I'm feeling like a new man. I've been out on a few walks and even rode my bike to the local grocery store. I'm feeling very lucky indeed.
Thank you to all that made donations to our family. We appreciate the assistance small and large too all that gave.
With much love and affection,
Ron, Liliana, Michelle and Isabella Guitard
