Earlier this week my three good friends, Ian, Anthony, Erik and myself set off to shoot the amazing landscapes and dark skies of Tenerife. This was a trip which excited us all, due to family life, work commitments etc... it is getting harder to go away as a group of friends together, so there is always that extra element of excitement. After getting there on Monday night, we headed straight above the clouds to Teide National Park to shoot the Milky Way Core, it was the best possible start to this trip!
Tuesday, after a few hours sleep we headed to the scenic Masca Valley, this was when the trip turned into a disaster. While getting out to enjoy the views, we wandered 40-50ft from our car to sit on some rocks and just take it all in. I had been flying and shooting some video on my drone, when after 6/7 minutes Anthony decided to go back to the car and grab his camera to get some shots, it was then he noticed our car had been broken into and all of their gear taken. At first we all thought each of us was playing one big joke on each other but we quickly realised this was not the case. We went straight to a Local Police station about 7 or 8 miles away, who told us they were local police and couldn't deal with such an incident, they had sent us to the National Police 45 minutes drive away. When we arrived at the National Police, our only way of filing a report was by ringing Police HQ in Madrid, which we did. We knew it was pretty much a lost cause, the Police also didn't really seem to interested or bothered about it, we just needed to report for any possible claims on travel insurance. All in all they had about €12,000 worth of gear stolen, absolutely devastating. It has taken the lads 8-10 years to build up their gear for it all to be gone in a matter of seconds. I have set a goal at half the value of the gear taken in an attempt to get the guys up and running ASAP. Photography is not just a hobby to most people, its an escape from the stress of every day life.
