Clara's Bolivia Internship w/ IJM

Donation protected
Dear friends,

As some of you already know, I have some very exiting plans for the next year! In May I will graduate from University of Mary Washington with a dual degree in English and Spanish. I am thrilled to report that I have been accepted into a 10-12 month internship with International Justice Mission (IJM) serving in La Paz, Bolivia starting in early July.

IJM, for those of you who don’t know, is the world’s largest anti-slavery organization. IJM works to protect the poor from violence in 19 communities all over the developing world. In La Paz, specifically, IJM intervenes in cases of child sexual assault.  IJM’s lawyers, investigators, and social workers ensure that vulnerable children are protected and see that those committing crimes against them are punished according to Bolivian law.

I will be serving as IJM Bolivia’s Communications Intern. I will have the privilege of interacting with clients and staff in order to produce written materials in both English and Spanish that will help advance the work. These internships are highly competitive, and I am absolutely thrilled to have been selected for this important work!

Because all of IJM’s internships are unpaid, I will be setting up a Go Fund Me page to cover the cost of travel and living expenses for the 10-12 months I’ll be living in La Paz. I am wondering if you would be willing to help me on my way. The total amount IJM suggests I raise for the year is $17-$20,000. They also recommend that I reach at least half of my goal before I deploy. Any and all gifts, whatever the size, would be so greatly appreciated.

In return for your generosity, I’d be delighted to keep you up to date on my adventure. I’ll be keeping a blog to let those interested know how it’s going. You can access the blog here: msclarahope.com. Apart from IJM’s work, which will be fascinating, challenging, heart-breaking, and amazing, Bolivia itself is both beautiful and intriguing. La Paz, as you may know, sits at 12,000 feet above sea level. That’s 2 miles—twice as high as Denver! I would love for you to follow me on my adventure as I learn to engage this challenging work, and to do simple things like live and cook at high altitude.

I’ll keep you posted as these plans progress,

Clara
