School Project in Ghana

Hello,

My name is Renaud Comba. I am from Aix en Provence, France. I recently graduated from McGill University, Canada with a B.A. in Political Science and International Development.
During my first year at McGill, I began working with an NGO called Borderless World Volunteers. The organization empowers students to create, develop, and achieve their own development projects overseas. With four friends we developed three micro-projects to implement in a small community of the Volta Region in Ghana called Agbozume-Klikor during the summer 2012. These projects aimed at reducing the prevalent rate of HIV/AIDS in high schools, empowering women through weekly meetings to share their problems and find solutions between them, and increasing the involvement of girls in athletics in primary schools.
Because of my rewarding experience, I decided to go back to this small community for three months during the summer of 2013. During this second trip, I did economic field research on behalf of two McGill professors. This second trip allowed me to reconnect with the Ewe culture and with the Agbozume-Klikor community.
While there, Mr. Kporfor, Head Master of the El-Shaddai International School Complex (E.L.I.S.C.O.) asked me if I was interested in taking over his position in the school for a year, giving him time to take leave for health. Because of my love for this region and for the people of the community, I gladly accepted.
While this project of helping the school seems very ambitious, I truly believe that my genuine passion for this school, my experience as president of an NGO for a year, and my work ethic acquired at McGill will allow me to lead E.L.I.S.C.O. towards brighter horizons.
To lead crucial projects for this school, I need to raise funds. While I will be working for free, I cannot support alone all the costs involved with the development of several very important projects (creation of a boarding school, classroom renovations, administration enhancement...) that will both increase the security of the children in the school and allow them to fully benefit from the school’s infrastructures.

Mr. Kporfor founded El-Shaddai International School Complex in 1991. E.L.I.S.C.O. aims at offering a quality education to poor children of the community of Agbozume-Klikor.
El-Shaddai is composed of two major compounds (“The Old School” and the “New School”). The “Old School” is composed of a preschool and of a primary school (150 students). The “New School” is composed of a primary school and of a middle school (250 students).
El-Shaddai is also equipped with a computer laboratory (3 computers working on Windows 95) and a small library (50 books, most of them in French and German).
Today, according to the governmental results of the B.E.C.E., El-Shaddai offers the best education in the whole community.
For more than 23 years, E.L.I.S.C.O. has tried to make their services financially accessible to the less fortunate. However, for the past few years, the cost of living has increased tremendously leaving Mr. Kporfor searching for solutions.
For the fourth year in a row, El-Shaddai is financially struggling not to increase its school fees.

The money that will be donated to El-Shaddai International School Complex will go toward:

1. Creation of a Boarding School: The creation of a boarding school within the compound of the New School is a priority. Last summer, a 20-year-old girl died not too far away from the school, supposedly killed for sorcery. While practices of sorcery are not new in Ghana, it reminded both the parents and the students of the risk of coming to school.
This boarding school will be the perfect place for students living far away from school to live and study in a safe environment.

2. Renovation of El-Shaddai’s Classrooms: Most of the school’s classrooms are seriously deteriorated. There is an urgent need to replace the black boards in each of the 10 classes (The teachers are currently writing on the walls of the classrooms).
Furthermore, I believe that each student should have a chair and a table to follow the lesson and do his or her homework correctly. This is not the case today as there is only one table for four students.

3. Renovation of the Computer Lab & Library: Another project is to renovate the computer laboratory and the library of E.L.I.S.C.O. I believe that if students beneficit from great school’s infrastructures and materials, it will help them in their learning experience.
As of today, El-Shaddai has 3 operational computers (Windows 95) without Microsoft Office software and Internet.
The library counts less than 50 books (most of them have been brought by the volunteers and thus, are in French and German) on its shelf.
