Who are we?

Charm City Clinic is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, founded in 2009 by students and community leaders in East Baltimore, operating at the Men and Families Center in Baltimore City. Our members are dedicated to our mission of assisting low-income residents of Baltimore in accessing sustainable, high-quality healthcare and social services and removing the barriers to this care. We work to meet this mission with a range of volunteers and full-time staff, which includes an executive board of directors, an auxiliary leadership board, volunteer physicians, and a large base of community volunteers. The executive and auxiliary boards oversee the day-to-day operations and the vision of the Charm City Clinic and work to improve our operations and expand our impact within the community. Students from nearby colleges make up  most of our volunteers and auxiliary board and play an integral role in delivering our services. Our full-time staff and Executive Board has included community leaders and community residents.

What do we do?

The mission of the Charm City Clinic is to help low-income Baltimore residents access sustainable, high-quality health care and other social services. We do so by providing health resource assistance, screenings and counseling, and follow-up services. Our Health Resource Center (HRC) provides assistance with health insurance enrollment, primary medical care, mental health and substance abuse treatment, food stamps, energy bill assistance, and job training. Our Preventative Health Screening Program complements this community-based case management approach. Our volunteer screeners and physicians screen clients for hypertension, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, depression, and addiction, which are among the primary causes of excess morbidity and mortality in the neighborhoods in which we work. Patients are counseled on how to prevent progression of chronic conditions and directed to appropriate longitudinal care. Finally, CCC aims toward long-term continuity with each client. HRC staff follows up with patients regularly to monitor their progress and to work toward sustainable solutions to the challenges they face in accessing healthcare.

Why we need your help:

As CCC continues its work in Baltimore, it also faces the ongoing challenge of funding.  As an organization dedicated to the needs of the underserved, we do not take in any revenue from our clients, and never will.  Our clinical team consists entirely of unpaid volunteers and the majority of our HRC staff are volunteers as well.  In fact, since its founding, CCC has relied primarily on our in-house Grants team and their tireless work to obtain external funding sources which make up the majority of our organization’s income.  This is supplemented by a small number of private donations, often by generous members of the local community.  However, as our client base continues to expand and we broaden the range of services we offer, we inevitably run into situations that prevent us from being able to deliver care at the level we know we can achieve.  On the ground, this translates to delays in providing social services such as prescription copay assistance or transportation assistance.  We increasingly find ourselves juggling these unforeseen consequences as CCC grows to better meet the needs of its community.  In truth, the math is simple: external funding has been relatively constant as the number of grants available to us has not changed in spite of our growth.  Our income has stayed the same but our costs have gone up.  We have explored other options and models but none thus far has satisfactorily retained the intent and mission of CCC.  It is because of this that we are reaching out to you.  We hope you see the value in the work that CCC does in Baltimore.  We
hope you can get a sense of what this organization means to its clients and why it continues to attract new volunteers, year in and year out.  Above all, we hope to have your support; more than ever before, our work depends on it.  Thank you.
