Bollards for Pedestrian Safety
I am a board of director of a Buddhist temple at 3440 Foothill Blvd in Oakland, CA, True Buddha Vijaya Temple .
Since the City of Oakland widened a curve street in front of our temple, we have had FIVE major accidents since 2018, including three accidents happening this year in 2020 June, July, and August.
Fortunately, no one got hurt. However, if someone had been walking on the sidewalk they would've been very seriously injured or killed.
Our team sent many emails urging the City of Oakland and the Department of Transportation to address the issue such as installing street bollards, speed bumps, and red light cameras.
Unfortunately, both the City of Oakland and the Department of Transportation replied that they are unable to improve street safety due to a large number of traffic concerns every year and limited resources.
With inaction, the risk of people getting injured or killed is high. Next and opposite to the temple are a senior home, Casa Velasco, and an assisted living facility, Mercy Retirement & Care Center, and with schools around, a lot of seniors, families, and children walk in the area.
To not take chances, we therefore started this campaign to raise funds for building street bollards.
The bollards would protect our temple, but more importantly, protect the lives in our Fruitvale community.
Image 1: Having these street bollards are going to protect pedestrians from cars ramping into the sidewalk or building. Also, bollards give the illusion of the street being narrower. Motorists are said to become more cautious in tighter spaces, which gives bollards the indirect ability to then manage the speed of traffic.
The following shows the videos and pictures of each accident since 2018 on the curved street at the temple.

Video 2: A security camera footage showed a car lost control and smashed into the temple sidewall. (date: June 13th, 2020)

To build the street bollards, the project requires City of Oakland approval. We have initiated communication with them to follow the application process. We will update donors on the progress from time to time.
We can not just keep on waiting for the government to respond or take action only after somebody has died. We hope to raise enough funds to set up street bollards to prevent cars from coming up on the sidewalk and injuring or killing people.
Your donation will go a long way to protecting the pedestrians and the Fruitvale community.
