PROGRAMS AND SERVICES: SCOEC offers a number of essential programs to the Somalis and other refugee and immigrant groups in the Rochester area. Among these are: English Classes/Interpretation and Translation Services Literacy and linguistic skills are essential programs which enable new refugees to adapt to the new culture and integrate into their host environment. SCOEC offers language classes, in addition to providing interpretation/translations services for community members in Kizigua and Mai Mai. Citizenship Classes SCOEC's Citizenship Classes are designed to equip new refugees/immigrants with the information and knowledge necessary to become US citizens and active members of the broader community. Instructors use multimedia tools and translation of the tests to prepare potential applicants. ABOUT US The Somali Community Outreach & Education Center (SCOEC) is a community-based 501(c)(3) organization that serves and supports Somalis and other refugees and immigrants in Rochester, NY. HISTORY: In February 2008, Somalis and Somali Bantu elders and intellectuals conducted a meeting to start an association to support the needs of Somalis in Rochester. The community realized its goal of a center dedicated to helping the integration and adjustment of Somalis in the Rochester area. The SCOEC of Rochester was officially launched in 2009 with a 501 (C)(3) status. MISSION: It is the mission of SCOEC to provide effective services that would help Somalis and other refugees undergo smooth transitional process, become self-sufficient and successful in their own country. BOARD SCOEC is governed by an 11-member board of directors consisting of community members and activists.
