Our thoughts have been with our dear Kannada Koota members during this challenging and unprecedented time. We hope everyone is abiding by the health directives.

The exact economic impact of the statewide closures and the shelter-in-place directive is currently unknown but is undoubtedly significant. KKNC is raising money to support local bay area families and individuals in need.

Given the turmoil in everyone’s lives, we understand that support is very difficult.

Across Karnataka, Maharashtra, Kerala, incessant rains have created havoc killing over 100 people and displacing lakhs. At least 5,375 NDRF personnel have been pressed into rescue and relief operations across India. 

The Karnataka state government has declared 80 Taluks in 17 districts as flood-affected and the death toll went up to 26 and thousands of people were rendered homeless. The flood-hit Taluks are in Belagavi, Bagalkote, Raichur, Kalaburagi, Yadgir, Vijayapura, Gadag, Haveri, Dharwad, Shivamogga, Chikkamagaluru, Kodagu, Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Uttara Kannada and Mysuru districts.

Three IAF helicopters rescued 37 persons in Belagavi, Gadag and Raichur districts on the third day of aerial operation. Around 1,500 food packets were air dropped to villages affected by floods, says an IAF release. We also learnt that the Jnana Sindhu school for the blind in Hole Alur is also affected by flood waters of Mala Prabha river. Kids from the school are safe and currently in a temporary accommodation.

As Kerala struggles to pick up the pieces after floods battered the state, Kodagu (Coorg) district in neighboring Karnataka is also facing a similar situation. Heavy downpour in the district has caused flooding and left at least eight people dead and more than 4,000 displaced.

In Kodagu district, a total of 845 houses have been damaged; 123 km of road, 58 bridges, 278 government buildings and 3,800 electric poles have been damaged
