Needless to be said, the past 2 years have been extremely rough for everyone. Now that students have returned to the classroom, they are faced with the daunting task of overcoming the year and a half of interrupted instruction. The inequities that persisted in our schools have only been widened during this timeframe, with low-income students, students of color, and English language learners most adversely affected. The majority of the 5th grade students at the Josiah Quincy fit one (or more) of those designations.

 

In particular, students' exposure to science education has been particularly damaged. While reading and math instruction could be more readily adapted to the world of online learning, science instruction proved to be far more difficult. Reading articles or watching videos is not an adequate substitute for the hands-on aspect of science that captivates the imagination and curiosity our students.

 

My school has been given an incredible opportunity to send all our 5th graders on a week long STEM boot camp at with the STARBASE program at Hanscom Air Force Base. During the trip, the students will experience 25 intensive hours of challenging (and exciting) learning that includes both open-ended and guided-inquiry activities. For our students, this will be an adventure - an opportunity to be brave and try new experiences. On top of that, this program is FREE.

 

Unfortunately, the major roadblock is the cost for transportation. With bus driver shortages and the distance we have to travel, every day of buses cost $500. While the school has some funding, the majority of this will have to be fundraised in order to go. By raising $7500, we will be able to cover the costs of 3 classrooms, which will make this dream possible. A generous friend has donated $1000 and I will chip in the same amount to be matched by their company, so the new target goal is $3500. 

 

These types of opportunities are so rare for urban schools, particularly for a school where 84% of the students are considered high needs.

 

Our first group of students is scheduled to be sent at the beginning of February, so please help me in giving the students at the Josiah Quincy Elementary School this opportunity!
