Honduras Hope

Justin Briggs tragically passed away during the summer following his freshman year at Miami University.  To commemorate him, the Justin Briggs Scholarship Fund was created with the mission of providing Honduran students the opportunity to attend primary and secondary schools, a cause very dear to Justin throughout his life. This was made possible by Honduras Hope, a non-profit started by Justin’s grandfather.

In 2016, his friends at Miami hosted a lacrosse tournament to raise money to donate to the Justin Briggs Scholarship Fund. This became an annual event. The fundraisers were a great success, raising more than $19,000 over 3 years, due to the support of Justin’s endless list of friends. We would like to continue this annual fundraiser, in memory of Justin and in support of families in Honduras who are struggling.

Right now, the world is facing one of its toughest challenges in a long time. While many of us are hurting, we are lucky to live in a developed country with ample resources. Some communities are not as fortunate as we are. For families in Honduras, their most pressing problem right now is access to food. The money that is donated to the GoFundMe will go directly to Honduras Hope to help families in rural Honduras, in memory of Justin.  Honduras Hope is a charitable organization that supports health, education, and entrepreneurship in rural Honduras.

Friends:  We are raising money to help re-unite Frances with her family.  Frances and her son Fernando arrived from Honduras at our southern border two weeks ago.  Both her 12-year old niece and her husband were with her, but they were both separated from them and detained.  Franconia Community Church Pastor Emeritus Bill Briggs was able to get Frances and Fernando on a bus from Laredo Texas to South Station Boston.  Their whole story is harrowing. Frances and her son Fernando are here legally, and have an immigration hearing date a year from now.  A team of people from Honduras Hope and Franconia Community Church and our surrounding community are raising money to get them legal representation, help re-unify the family, support them with housing, food, clothes, medical care, etc.   If you are looking for a way to do something to help with this dire migrant situation, here is a family that could sure use your support.  Let's get this family back together.

We're starting to fundraise for the 3rd Annual Justin Briggs Memorial Lacrosse Tournament. Although we were not able to hold the tournament last year, it was still a huge success! We raised nearly $8,500 and donated it all to Honduras Hope. We're hoping that the weather will allow us to hold the tournament this year and that we raise even more money than last year.

For those who are new, Justin was in our fraternity at Miami University and his bright and charismatic personality made him a lot of friends throughout the Greek community as well Miami in general. During the summer after freshman year he passed away tragically. Justin's favorite sport was lacrosse and he was very good at it. For the past 3 years we have held a lacrosse tournament in April to bring the Miami community together to remember Justin and celebrate his life by playing the game that he loved. All of the proceeds are donated to the Justin Briggs Memorial Scholarship Fund through Honduras Hope, which was started by Justin's grandfather.
