Our Command vehicle (Utility 41) responds to every Seward Highway accident, emergency medical, water rescue and fire incident in Girdwood and along Turnagain Arm. The vehicle carries Advance Life Support medical equipment.
We respond to emergencies on the Seward Highway in a highway safety corridor known for the frequency and severity of motor accidents, often in inclement weather with poor visibility due to snowfall, wind, rainfall. Our travel time to accidents can take up to an hour given the large service area we respond to and mutual aid provided to Kenai Peninsula Borough and City of Whittier.
The current 2009 vehicle is 14 years old and has been having frequent mechanical issues in 2021.
Our fundraising goal would fund the base replacement vehicle with a Ford 2022 F150 Interceptor with a canopy. We would then add $30,000 to outfit the vehicle with the required light bar, radio, computer system, drug safe, knox box.
We have 2 other 2005 command vehicles. These 16 year old vehicles are used to close the Seward Highway for accidents before law enforcement arrives which can be 30-90 minutes. These vehicles also need replacement.
Our Girdwood fire service area was hit with the impact of a 500 year storm event on October 30, 2021. The majority of Seward Highway responses are outside of the fire service area but within the Areawide EMS service area.
