Help Preserve the History of Pismo Beach
In 1905, Michael and Mary Ann Meherin built a lovely home for themselves and their family. Mary Ann was the daughter of John Michael Price who was the founder of Pismo Beach, California. This house stood on what is now Shell Beach Road, just across from the still existing Palomar Hotel.
As roads widened and improved, the Meherin House was moved several times. It finally came to rest on Mattie Road where it weathered for years until developers purchased the land for a housing development.
In 2001, the Friends of Price House worked with the City of Pismo Beach and negotiated the use of park fees to once again move the Meherin House. It was moved to its forever home, the Price Historical Park where it joined the Anniversary House, the home of Mary Ann’s parents, John and Andrea Price.
Restoration began with a new foundation, roof, multiple repairs everywhere, a fresh coat of paint on the exterior, and most recently the installation of windows that are replicas of the originals.
With the exterior work complete, restoration can now focus on the interior. This restoration plan will be completed in four stages: Electrical, Plumbing, Drywall, and lastly, Interior Finishes. The first stage will be to rough in the electrical.
While restoring an old house can be the most rewarding experience in the world, it can also cost a pretty penny to preserve the historic, architectural, and aesthetic character of the home which then becomes an important part of the community’s heritage.
Historic buildings tell stories about what the community was and how it became what it is. Those stories help us to understand who we are.
Once the restoration is complete, we will then be able to share the history of this home by inviting people to visit the park and have a tour of the home. They will hear docents tell the stories of the people who lived there.
A wise person once said, “The only way to preserve history is to share it!” We cannot do that without your help.
Will you please consider making a gift toward the electrical stage of the restoration today?
Every donation counts, no matter what size. Your donation will make an impact on the achievement of our goal to restore this beautiful home. The money will be carefully spent to help preserve the historic, architectural, and aesthetic character of the home.
Donors will receive our Fall Newsletter, a publication on the history of Michael Meherin, and updates on our progress once work begins. You may also request a private tour of both the Meherin House and Price House.
