About Friends of the Cartmell House
Our mission is to preserve the historic circa 1795 homestead of Elijah and Mary Cogar Cartmell for use an an educational site to explore the major developments that have occurred in the South Elkhorn District of Fayette County, Kentucky over the last 240 years. This house, neglected for 20 years, is highly visible and advantageously located near social venues for both adults and youth. It deserves our efforts of preservation as one of the few remaining homes of the time period in Fayette County. With the use of visuals, period appropriate decor, and historical records, we will present a walk-thru experience reflecting how persons, both free and enslaved, lived and worked throughout this time period and how the Civil War affected both families and rural life in Fayette County.
