Cruzan Cowgirls Emergency Preparedness Project
We have been notified that our island’s access to horse feed from Puerto Rico will likely be impacted in the near future by the spread of COVID-19. The factories which produce and ship our feed are located in Puerto Rico where social distancing to prevent the spread of the virus has already led to strict curfews and many many business closures. It's very possible and likely that the factory may be forced to shut down for the foreseeable future and cargo shipments may be interrupted. This will impact our horses and all those owned by members of our community. Almost all feed stores on island order from the same company we do, so this will deeply impact our ability to continue to provide feed to the horses in our care. In order to be prepared, we would like to have six weeks of feed on hand for the horses at our farm and plenty of extra to give away to horse owners in need when the feed stores here run out. In addition, there are several essential projects we must finish as soon as possible at the farm. The most important projects that we need to finish setting up at the new farm is moving in our cargo containers for feed storage and complete the well project so we can guarantee access to feed and water for the horses no matter what happens.
As you know, most of the bills for the rescue are typically paid with money earned through our horse tours and we do A LOT on our own without asking for community help. However, a major dip in tourism means a huge hit to revenue....but the horses still have to eat! And be watered! And so do all of the other horses in the community whose owners find themselves suddenly out of work or with reduced hours and income.
Now is the time to ready ourselves for the tough road ahead and ensure we are in a position to not only bring all of the horses in our care safely through this crisis, but also have the ability assist our community during this time of need and we can not do it without you.
Will you please help us by pitching in to fund a few essential projects and our essential needs?
$7,500 will cover the cost of:
* Four pallets of feed. This will bring our feed on hand up to six weeks worth PLUS enough to give feed away to horse owners in need when and if the feed stores run out due to supply chain interruptions caused by COVID-19 or for owners whose ability to provide for their horses is compromised by reduced income due to COVID-19. It is inevitable we will want and need to give some feed away, please help make sure we have enough to go around!
* Lock it up! We own two shipping containers which are used for feed and equipment storage but we have to get them professionally moved to the new farm. When full, one container securely holds about six weeks worth of feed. These containers are absolutely necessary to keep our feed stock and supplies for our horses and the community dry and secure.
* Get the water flowing! We drilled a well at the new farm but there’s more to do before it truly help us with our watering needs. We need your help to build the monument for the electrical box so WAPA can hook up power to run a pump and our well, we need to build a secure pump house so our pump and pressure tanks are kept out of the weather or stolen, and we need purchase and install a pump. We also need to set up our current emergency water storage tank properly and get two more containers so we can always have two weeks of water for the animals for anytime the power goes out (we are already starting to work on hurricane preparedness because on top of Coronavirus, hurricane season is just three months away!)
You CAN l make a diference from near or far! Here’s how you can help:
Give a financial contribution— we know times are tough and scary for everyone right now. No amount is too big or too small to make a difference and we are incredibly grateful for your generosity. Right now, $17 covers the cost of one bag of feed. If 375 people donate just $20 each, we can reach our goal.
If you live on island, you can also consider booking a horse tour for you and your family. The busier we are earning our funding, the less we need to ask of our already financially strained community. To book with us, please text us at (340) [phone redacted] or visit cruzancowgirls.com to learn more today.
If you are a plumbing, electrical, or construction professional and want to donate or discount services to help our island’s horses, please let us know!
Share this far and wide and ask your friends to support a cause that’s near and dear to your heart. Everyone needs a helping hand right now, so let’s work together to make sure St. Croix’s horses make it through this crisis. Thank you for anything you can do to help!
