Children's Diabetes Foundation

This is my nephew, Christian. Back in 2019, my nephew got extremely sick. Finally, in 2020, at the age of 10, about 3 months later, the doctors diagnosed him as a type 1 diabetic. Christian got sick Saturday, January 11th, around 6 pm with flu-like symptoms and went to bed. The next morning, January 12th, 2025, my brother, his dad, found him on the floor no longer breathing. With his diabetes and the flu, he passed in his sleep. When he passed, he was 16 years old and 4 weeks away from turning 17. In the five years with him, struggling with diabetes, we learned so much. Childhood diabetes is much more common than we realized, and we would like to help support the funding towards treatments and possibly a cure for future families.

Christian was a highly active kid. You would never have known that he battled with type 1 diabetes. Even through his early years of being a diabetic, he played baseball and he was always outdoors riding dirt bikes, four-wheelers, and going on bicycle trips. He’s been to Hatfield and McCoy many times. The last few years, he took up bowling and he enjoyed that so much. He worked alongside his family at the family business, working on cars.

He would always ride his bicycle as much as he could. We were going on trips every week with friends and family to ride different trails in the area, and every month we would go and ride the Great Allegheny Passage. But depending on the weather and how he felt with his diabetes, he would not always go. Last year, he finally did Pittsburgh to Cumberland in one trip with us. And this year, we planned to go from Cumberland to DC. In August, our family and friends will be taking that trip in his memory and we would like to have met our goal by then. Mary Craddock Spicer was Diabetic. Diagnosed as a child, she became one of less than 8% of all Diabetics with Type 1 Diabetes: a chronic condition in which the pancreas can not produce insulin. After battling this disease for 63 years, she passed away on 11/26/2022.

-About The Children's Diabetes Foundation- (CDF)

The Foundation's mission is: To raise funds for research, promote diabetes awareness and education, assist families in need, provide continuing education scholarships, and sponsor social activities for children and their families.

Insulin alone can cost $300 every month. Patients need pricey and necessary additional care and equipment to survive. On average, the first year of care for a newly diagnosed type 1 Diabetic is over $20,000.

40% of CDF Center’s patients are uninsured, underinsured, or simply can’t afford the out of pocket expenses.

Assistance Programs at CDF, like The Helping Hand Program, provide diabetic supplies, travel and accommodation costs, medical alert IDs, and much more to those patients and families in need.

The Helping Little Hands Program provides financial support for pregnant women with type 1 Diabetes. It ensures they have the proper technology, supplies, and associated appointment funds to ensure a healthy pregnancy and baby.

In addition to directly aiding those in need, The Children's Diabetes Foundation is currently working on 81 research studies. All are intended to help better the lives of Diabetics everywhere!

diabetes can have a huge effect on people but if you can ´ t afford the supplies it can be a night Mayer if you cannot afford the supplies and you might go in debt so i want to make it so people can afford the supplies. so lets go and help people
