Changing Lives in Kenya - House Build Project

We're raising money for Gathimba Edwards Foundation and every donation will help. 

We continue to change the lives of children in Kenya and have set up this page to fund raise for our House Building Project taking place in October 2019. 

We have identified four families in Kenya we hope to build a house for but we will only be able to build all four if we raise this money for the building materials and land.    



One of the families is Elizabeth and her 5 daughters.  Myles & Gideon first visited this wonderful family in April 2018 and were so inspired by their commitment to education despite desperate challenges. Elizabeth and her 5 daughters Josephine, Fidelis, Catherine, Faith and Margaret live in a broken wooden house (£5 per month rent) in Karatina. They are all incredibly talented academically but face many challenges. Elizabeth is not employed so she does casual work which gets her up to £2 a day. If there is no work available that day then there is no food for them. The children all go the library to study and Elizabeth really prioritises their education – on occasion even over food! Elizabeth is a sister among 9 brothers from a poor family. The brothers were very dictator-like and abusive towards her and the girls so she moved away for their own safety. She was always very worried about her daughters when she was out at work. They moved into their current wooden house in July 2017, having previously stayed at her former employer’s house. Unfortunately the employer wasn’t paying her on time and often insisted that the children work too. Catherine is very friendly and smiley and wants to be a chef when she grows up. We had never heard of one of our kids wanting to be a chef before and so we were able to get her some work experience at Omega Gardens Hotel which our guests stay at whilst in Karatina – she was so happy! Her latest grades were 352/500 (GEF’s target mark which can take a child to secondary school is 250/500).  

As of the end of July 2019 thanks to offline donations and the volunteers fund raising efforts who are travelling to Kenya this October to help build the houses, we can say we are currently sitting at £19,852 raised. We still have a way to go to achieve the £24,000 for the full project but we would like to thank everyone who has helped so far and we welcome any support to help us reach our goal.

What your donations really mean for the 4 houses we will be building in October…
£1 - 1kg of iron sheet nails
£5 - a bag of cement
£10 - 3 metre coloured iron sheets (gauge 30)
£30 - 4 pieces of ply wood for internal walls
£32 - a steel window frame
£40 - all the window glass for one house, including putty
£50 - 2-piece sofa set (3 seat & 2 seat sofas)
£55 - external steel door
£100 - 10 tonnes of sand for the house foundations (15 tonnes are needed per house)
£145 - 3,000 litre water tank
£255 - one solar panel (1 per house)
£370 - 1 toilet with 2 shower cubicles (shared between 2 families)
£450 - kitchen (separate from main house)
£6,500 - Fully furnished 3 bedroom house with solar power

We are proud to support the education, shelter and clothing of over 300 children in Kenya. We also provide seminars, counselling, business start ups and sustainable food solutions to families across various regions of Kenya. Since 2014 we have been able to build 34 homes for over 150 children - many of which would have not been possible without our volunteers who travel to Kenya with us twice a year from all over the world. We also support children in Aberdeenshire through the Neil Jaffrey Initiative.
