Continuing Our Support for Our Syrian Family
A refugee is classified as someone who “has been forced to flee his or her country because of persecution, war, or violence" and who "has a well-founded fear of persecution for reasons of race, religion, nationality, political opinion or membership in a particular social group.” In order to be accepted for resettlement, refugees must first undergo a long and arduous vetting process, averaging 18-24 months, and those who are lucky enough to be selected continue to face great challenges in starting over in a new country. However, once they get to the United States, their journey is not over. It is a long and expensive process to get settled and assimilated in the United States.
Centre College’s Religious Life Office in partnership with Centre College organizations (Bonner Program, Centre Peace, Muslim Student Association, and Centre Christian Fellowship), numerous religious communities in the Danville community (the Presbyterian Church of Danville, Islamic Society of Danville, Trinity Episcopal Church, and Grace Presbyterian Church), and Kentucky Refugee Ministries have worked hard to help assimilate a family of six from Syria (2 parents and 4 children). Many of us, myself included, joined together to welcome the family into the community through helping with moving, grocery shopping, and doctor's appointments.
They are settling in well, but still need some help with some special expenses over the next few months. For example, the United States government requires refugees to apply for a permanent residence card (“green card”) a year and a day after their arrival in the United States. Kentucky Refugee Ministries has sought to make this process as easy as possible through grants and legal aid. However, it will still cost about $700 dollars for this family to apply.
Last year, through your generosity, we were able to help this family settle in their new Kentucky home. This year, Centre College is hoping to continue helping the family and raise $2000. The funds we raise will be held in an account at the Presbyterian Church of Danville and distributed as needed from that account.
