Thousands of single family homes and condominiums in northeast Connecticut (and lower Massachusetts) are crumbling. A quarry in the region supplied concrete that contains a mineral called pyrrhotite. This mineral reacts over time to humidity and oxygen, slowly degrading the concrete to the point of swelling and cracking. This causes homes to become structurally unsound. The damage to the concrete is irreversible. No one is taking responsibility and the homeowners are told they must each pay $150,000-$200,000+ to replace the basement walls in their homes. Patching will not fix this problem.

As homeowners, we have united as the Connecticut Coalition Against Crumbling Basements  to give victims a voice. Gifts raised through this Go Fund Me campaign will be used to support the work of the coalition, including printing materials and mailings to better educate the public, costs associated with coalition meetings, and other fees such as the website domain. With your help, we can spread awareness to find solutions that restore the financial value of affected homes without forcing homeowners into bankruptcy.
