Brown Heart Hawaii - Shelter

Donation protected
Aloha No Kakou.   Many of you will see we are up and running BrownHeart Hawaii’s initial outside funding for our unique model of care for women on Hawaii Island who are pregnant and struggling with addiction and or substance misuse.  The house, known affectionately as “Nitta’s House”, is the evolution of the community collaboration between Fred Nitta MD OBGYN and Charles Bogdahn LCSW PsyD.

Having met six years ago, Dr. Nitta inspired me to our due diligence and through the years we have shared and served many of our mothers and at-risk pregnancies to help reduce the incidence rates for fetal alcohol and or drug related damage to the babies.  Eventually, we received a generous county grant from Mayor Billie Kenoi which gave us Window of Hope including rapid assessment outreach and case management of high-risk pregnancies.  Dr. Bogdahn completed an article on the project and data findings and is awaiting publication in an appropriate journal.

The BrownHeart model is a vision Dr. Bogdahn had for a sustainable Samaritan Model of service provision bringing highly skilled and paraprofessional together under the “Brown Heart” of our Kanaka Maoli.  Our host culture has, with great patience and love, tolerated the emerging immigrant groups.  Eventually in our view, bringing the best out in our multicultural island people.  Humility, love of Aina and Kuleana, observation and universal sense of service to each other.  These qualities of caring were integrated into our clinical model of care. Thus the shelter on Popolo Street, a sharing of cost by the Kahalioumi Family and Dr. Bogdahn, opened six weeks ago.  Up to now funded completely by Dr. Bogdahn but with our long-term plan for sustainability.
We have two amazing young women in their pregnancy living there towards their birthing and eventual reconciliation with their families.  Each is reducing their substance use and placing themselves under proper medical care.  As we grow organically as a staff we now move towards implementing our fully sustainable volunteer model of care.

We now need specific help with paying for utilities for two years and purchasing the cribs diapers toiletries and medical supplies to maintain our moms daily.
Most important is our adherence to human potential.  That women experience mixed standards of expectations in our society.  That mothers to be with addiction have title to zero competent opportunities in which to treat their complex needs.  That we have used the past eight years developing the relationships and collegial connections where our common welfare exists with already identified organizations on the island. The timing and values exist today for the integration of the highest offerings of our Hawaiian way of life, along with the highest principles from our community, to bring this idea to effective implementation.

Mahalo Nui and love to you who know that service to others is the only way to live well.  The life of this land is perpetuated in our Hawaiian way of life!!

All donations will provide services needed to keep the shelter open including food, utilities, and other miscellaneous costs.  All donations ARE tax deductible.  This is a valid 501c(3) organization.   We are also looking for volunteers and in-kind donation such as food, diapers, and other consumable goods.
