Guta Fleising (Bubby Guta)

Born in 1921 in Warsaw, Poland, Guta was the oldest of 7 children and was the sole survivor out of an extended family including parents, grandparents, uncles, aunts, cousins. Guta survived the Warsaw Ghetto as well as the Ghetto Uprising of April of 1943. She remembers how, on the second night of Passover in 1943, the Nazis turned off the electricity, the water, the gas, and then set fire to the ghetto. She miraculously survived not one but four concentration camps, including Majdanek, Auschwitz-Birkenau, Ravensbruck and Malhoff. Finally, she endured the Death Marches of the winter of 1945.

In March of 1946, in Lodz, Poland, she met and married Lipa Fleising, also a survivor. In February of 1947, she gave birth to a son, Sol, while living with her husband as refugees in a United Nations Displaced Persons camp in Ulm, Germany. In January, 1948, Guta and family arrived in Montreal, Canada as immigrants to start a new life together. In 1951, Guta gave birth to a daughter, Tina.

Guta is truly a remarkable Survivor but nonetheless bears the scars. She carries a 7-digit number that was painfully tattooed on her left arm while in Auschwitz, and endures endless, sleepless nights when images of her parents and siblings frequently appear.

Today, Guta has, thank G-d 7 grandchildren and 28 great grandchildren.
