Boxing It Up to Give Thanks

As the Thanksgiving season nears, it is important to remember the needy that often go without the delicious foods and holiday treats served on this special day. For many homes, budgeting vehicles and utility bills makes little spending cash for the wants and desires for holiday meals. Many families struggle to make the holiday memorable but still cost friendly.
West Virginia Key Club students are helping to change the face of Thanksgiving for these families. Our team of volunteer students has grown to include representatives of five schools throughout the state: Bridgeport, Gilmer County, Lewis County, Notre Dame, and Robert C. Byrd. Each committed to working together to distribute boxed dinners for needy families. Included in the box will be an assortment for a traditional Thanksgiving meal: canned vegetables, a frozen turkey, potatoes, gravy, stuffing, cranberry sauce, rolls, and a pumpkin pie! In our first year, Boxing It Up to Give Thanks raised $5,000 and benefitted hundreds throughout Clarksburg and Bridgeport in West Virginia. Now in our second season, we hope to double our fundraising and reach outward in service. Our student goals continue not only to bring awareness to hunger needs in our community, but also to promote lessons of leadership to Key Club members.
Kiwanis, the parent organization of Key Club International, a student-led leadership and service organization, is serving as 2018 advisors. Price Cutter will continue serving as a sponsor to provide discounted food items, storage, and use of their facilities for packaging and distribution. Efforts are underway to welcome support of additional food suppliers.
Community support is essential to meeting the campaign’s goals. In appreciation of your consideration, “WE” are part of the future of community service. Thank You!
