Public Lectures of Confucianism

Donation protected

Boston University Confucian Association (BUCA) is a student-run group aimed to promote the modernization and the globalization of Confucianism. According to the data provided by the university chaplain of Boston University, it is the only Confucian student group in America now. We believe that it is also so far the only non-govenmental and non-profit Confucian organization in America.
The founders of BUCA are Dr. Bin Song (宋斌) and Dr. Yair Lior (黎陽毅). Dr. Bin Song was once a PhD and lecturer of western philosophy in Nankai University, China. After finishing his visiting research in Harvard as a Harvard-Yenching Visiting Fellow and earning his master degree of theology in School of Theology, Boston University, he is now a PhD student of religious studies in Boston University. Dr. Yair Lior, born in Isreal and grown up in America and Europe, gained his PhD of religious studies from B.U in 2014 and before that, he studied Chinese aesthetics and theory of art in China for eight years. Dr. Song and Dr. Lior share the same academic advisors during their study of Confucianism and comparative religion in BU, Prof. Robert Neville and Prof. John Berthrong. As is well known, these two scholars are the representatives of "Boston Confucianism" in the global academia of Confucian studies and comparative religion, .
BUCA believes that an enjoyable image of an uprising China depends upon the formation of a compassion, creative and conscientious Chinese civil society on the earth.  It would be committed to perserving the traditional Chinese culture, Confucianism as its mainstream expression, well,  and, meanwhile, to improving and adjusting the tradition to the new challenges of human development in the new age. The process ought to be sustained by the sincerity of individual human mind-heart (心)from within, rather than to be superimposed from without.  Accordingly, an institutional revival of Confucianisma ought to be organized from bottom up, rather than top down. In other words, contemporary new Confucians should try their best to find the most efficient and righteous ways to manifest the trascendent values endorsed by Confucianism, such as creativity, humanity and harmony, in the particular situations of human existence here and now.
Based upon these ideas,  the activities that BUCA has organized included: a weekly reading group of Confucian classics such as Zhongyong (中庸), Yijing(易經) in 2012-4, a series of public lectures which focus on Confucianism and Chinese culture in general in Fall of 2014, a summer camp for the Confucian-Buddhist style of meditation in 2014, a short-term course on the practice of Taiji Martial Arts and so on. The association's website is www.bostonconfucianism.org and its Facebook page is https://www.facebook.com/pages/Boston-University-Confucian-Association/833178900055135, where some videos and posters for the previous events can be found.
In 2015 Spring and Fall semeters, BUCA intends to launch a series of public lectures focusing upon "Confucianism and the West". This is also the specific reason for this fundrasing campaign.
For the event, BUCA would like to invite eight prodigious native American scholars who are both familiar with Confucianism and have expertise in different disciplines (Religious studies, Philosophy, History, Sociology, Anthropology, Economics, Mangement, Natural Sciences and so one) to give a serious of public lectures in Boston University. The main topics  include:
      (1) the interaction between Confucianism and western culture (religion, philosophy, politics, economics and so on) in history.
     (2) the meaning of Confucianism to the solution of some concrete problems which are plaguing modern wester society  (racism, religious confrontation and dialogue, economic equality, education,  international civility and so on).
     (3) what are the limits and shortcomings of Confucianism  if it intends to survive and revive in modern society, and how can they be improved?
All the lectures will be filmed and dessiminated online. We would also invite a recognizable journal or a professional press to publish all the texts of the lectures given the permission of the lecturer.
We hope this lecture series could contribute a lot to the intellectualization and polularization of Confucianism among the ordinary audience of America and the global society. Especially, this is hoped to be a efficient project to promote the communication between Confucianism and the west. People would therefore be inspired to have deeper knowledge and practical resolution to solve the issues in contemporary human society.
The budget for the lecture series will be $14300, which includes:
Lecture fees, $8000. ($1000 per scholar)
Travel and logistics grant, $ 4000. ($500 per scholar)
      Dinner, $800. ($100 per scholar)
Freshments on spot, $800. ($100 per time)
      Advertisement and publishing, $500.
