Borehole Water Pumps, Karamojong
Donation protected

Primary school children and community families of students in Karimoja, north-east Uganda, need broken borehole pumps replaced so they have drinking water and water to bath and grow food during dry season (December to April).
Two solar pumps will be purchased with your donations and installed within 2 school compounds for security, with outlet pipes for village/community families of students. The schools are:
Kalokengal Primary School (459 students total, 58 boarding students).
Kalotom Primary School (1,220 students: 425 boarding students).
Funds are NEEDED NOW with the hot dry season approaching.
Elmer and I are presently in Uganda, and have just returned from Karimoja, Napak District doing borehole assessments, where most of the large rivers are already dry, existing rain water tanks in the schools are empty, and surrounding grasslands are diminishing from hot daytime temperatures.
PROBLEMS:
* Presently students walk long distance to fetch water every morning before breakfast. At Kalokengal Primary School this means a 1 km walk to a creek carrying back the daily water supply. Even the creek will dry soon with dry season.
* There is not sufficient water for bathing in dry season causing skin infection and illness, little medical attention. We saw school children ill with malaria with no treatment.
* Insufficient food for students in dry season: students cannot plant vegetables without near-by water, and fresh vegetables and fruit in local markets become expensive.
The solar pumps WILL PROVIDE school children and their village/community families with water for drinking, cooking, bathing, washing clothes and gardens in an unreliable climate when seasonal rains come late or not at all.
With water from the boreholes, vegetables will be grown on land that is already available within the school compounds and outside in the village community. Village men have asked us for seeds. Once there is water we will provide these.
67% of Uganda's population is aged 24 years and under:
Borehole water will provide agricultural occupation and livelihood for young men and women and for families, donating to healthier communities, and allowing children to remain in school.
Your donations are important now while my husband (volunteer engineer) is here in Uganda to purchase and install the solar pumps. We did not expect the high price of borehole pumps here in Uganda and need help with these. If funds are left-over after pumps are purchased, we will fund doctor/nurse visitation for students and village families with ill babies and toddlers.
We would be grateful for your donations so water can flow again for these children and families of the Karimojong in Napak District, Uganda.
THANK YOU sincerely!
