Books from Birth Early Literacy Coalition of ENC is dedicated to both making sure that every child in Pitt County has books at home AND that every member of our community understands the importance of reading aloud to children beginning at birth.
United Way of Pitt County launched Imagination Library in May 2016 in partnership with Books from Birth Early Literacy Coalition of ENC. Imagination Library sends one high-quality developmentally-appropriate book in the mail every month beginning at birth until the child's 5th birthday. We have already enrolled 3,000 children in a few short months! Yay! But, we want to enroll EVERY child in our county. All 11,000 of them!
Pitt County is considered a book desert by Unite for Literacy and we know there are children in our community that have no books. Teachers tell us that there are children that arrive to school having never held a book in their life. And only 1/2 of our kindergarteners are ready for school and in some cases arrive to kindergarten up to 6 academic levels behind their peers.
We can change this!
Imagination Library provides children with the exposure to books and words they need to enter our school system 'ready to learn'.
Imagine if we were no longer known as a book desert.
Imagine if all of our young children had books at home.
Imagine if everyone understood the power of reading aloud to young children, especially babies.
Imagine if all our kindergarteners were ready for school.
Imagine the magic when kids run to kindergarten bookshelves, pick up a familiar book and say, “I have this book!” and then every other kid in the room says, “Me too!” Teachers tell us this level of shared experience and vocabulary makes a world of difference.
Every gift helps!
A $5.00 gift sends a high quality book to 2 children.
A $30.00 gift makes Imagination Library possible for one child for an entire year.
A $150.00 gift provides a library of 60 Imagination Library books to one child from birth until their 5th birthday.
Our goal of $10,000 will provide 4,000 high-quality books to over 300 young children for a whole year!
