Bike Ride for Cancer Research

Donation protected
I have Ulcerative Colitis...

I've lived with this disease for nearly 12 years and will battle it's symptoms the rest of my life. After this long, my chances for Colorectal Cancer start to increase dramatically.

Gene Burden, my friend and Larissa's father, also had UC. Gene passed this last summer from Bile duct cancer (cholangiocarcenoma) that quickly spread through his body. While there is no clinical correlation, it is generally considered that long-term inflammatory diseases increase the risk of cancer in even the most healthy people. Gene was as healthy as anyone I ever met.

Larissa's mother, Marjorie, passed not more than 6 short weeks before her father from Metastatic Lung Cancer.

My father is also a recent survivor of prostate cancer.

These realities of my life have recently converged in a fantastic opportunity to use my strengths to overcome the weaknesses of those with similar diseases...

LEAVE IT ON THE ROAD  is a small organization with giant aspirations and effectiveness. By riding across the country in 2013, Michael Tabtibi and Andrew Hudon were able to build a foundation on which they would ultimately raise $150,000 for Breast/Colorectal Cancer research over the next two years. This year, Michael invited me and 5 other riders to join him on another campaign: riding from Portland to San Francisco (800 miles in 8 days).

This year's ride will be donating proceeds to The City of Hope Hospital in LA . Part of the fundraising will be opportunities to win free cycling products. As LEAVE IT ON THE ROAD puts it, "Epic rides with purpose, the story told in real time..." You can see where the stories are told on their site as well as their Instagram  and Tumblr  channels.

The goal of this fundraising campaign is to provide material support to the riders who are taking 10-15 days our of their time to raise awareness for these diseases. The support will be identified in the form of Mettle Cycling, a brand that I own and will be contributing products to the fundraising prizes mentioned above.

This includes:
• Nutrition for riders
• Gas for one of the support vehicles
• Modest accommodations
• Spare parts, tubes, tires
• Promotional Materials (Van decal, shirts, photography)

I will be riding Gene's beautiful Serotta Fierte, a gift I inherited from him, in his honor. I'm currently rebuilding this bike and including his name on the Top Tube, just like in the Pro-Peloton, to make sure everyone knows I'm only taking care of it for him and to remind myself of the wonderful way all of these circumstances have come together to honor his memory.

We are only looking for small donations to help with the cost of the effort. The big picture of LEAVE IT ON THE ROAD is still in need of it's own support. Please consider a purchase on their site or outright donation when making a pledge to this campaign. Split your number in half, if necessary, and give directly to the project that is providing this opportunity.

Thank you for love and support. See you out on the road,

-Randall & Larissa
