I think we have all been following the tragic events taking place in Syria and the displacement of close to 11 million innocent civilians - 6 million internally displaced and about 5 million refugees.
Dave and I have been left feeling helpless and somewhat hopeless watching this humanitarian crisis unfold but now we have an opportunity to do something! A group of folks in Blacksburg, VA (where we live) have been working with a State Department approved agency for months to help relocate a Syrian refugee family to Blacksburg. This week we were assigned a family of 8. The family includes 2 parents and 6 children ranging from age 4 months to 14 years old.
The family will be arriving in Blacksburg, VA the end of October and will require an enormous amount of assistance. They will need help with housing, purchasing food, learning English, obtaining psychological counseling and medical care, and finding jobs. We will donate all the money we receive to the Blacksburg Refugee Partnership for housing and the family's living expenses (utilities, groceries etc). It will be a lengthy process as they begin to heal from the violence and trauma they have known living in a worn torn country for many years.
While we have assembled a dedicated group of volunteers who are willing to help this family to meet these challenges, we still need additional help with finances. We ask that if you are moved to help with this effort that you please donate any amount that you are comfortable with.
You have some options:
1) You can donate directly to our Go Fund Me site. We can promise that all money raised will go directly to help this family (other than 5% The Go Fund Me site charges and the 3% We Pay takes to process the payments). We will write a check to Blacksburg Refugee Partnership (BRP) for the total amount raised.
2) You can donate directly to the Blacksburg Refugee Partnership through PayPal or check. All donations to BRP (a registered 501(c)(3)) are tax deductible. Checks should be made payable to Blacksburg Refugee Partnership and can be mailed to P.O. Box 116, Blacksburg, VA, 24063.
