"The Brass Band of Appalachia" is the Appalachian region's newest professional arts organization. The group was conceptualized primarily by Mr. Will Shell. Mr. Shell partnered with Dr. Art Haecker and Mr. Onsby Rose with the idea of creating a group that would draw from the Appalachian region's best and brightest brass and percussion musicians to form a professional level British style brass band. The goal of the group is to offer performances of brass band music to the community. Eventually the group hopes to represent the region at the North American Brass Band Association Championships.
This campaign is for start up costs for the group. These include, filing to become a 501c3 non-profit arts organization, sheet music expenses, advertising, organizational instrument purchases (such as Eb Tenor Horns), and many, many other expenses related to the formation of the organization.
The group has completed their inaugural music reading session on Feb. 29th and is proud to have had 42 professional brass and percussion musicians in attendance. Because the initial session was such a success, they have now scheduled thier first concert for May 1, 2016 in the auditorium at Virginia High School in Bristol, VA at 6PM. The musicians that have agreed to play this first concert with the group represent the top musical talent in the region. There are university professors, symphony orchestra musicians, the top graduate performance majors from the area, as well as music educators who continue to perform at exception levels on their instruments.
In order for this organization to be solidified they have appointed a small board of directors and are in the process of establishing a consititution and by-laws for the group. Serving on the initial board will be:
President, Mr. Will Shell
Vice-President, Dr. Art Haecker
Treasurer, Mr. Mark Collins, Sr.
Member-at-Large, Mr. Mark Collins, II
Music Director and Conductor, Mr. Onsby C. Rose
