Ecuador Crisis - Medical Missions

How YOU Can Help:

Since Saturday’s earthquake Bayside Medical Missions has been working around the clock to care for the people of Ecuador, but with more patients come more expenses. These costs include things such as medical supplies, 24 hour staffing, facility upkeep, medication, and repairs the facility still needs. The fundraising goal is still extremely relevant with 7,000 earthquake injuries reported, and all proceeds go directly to medical relief. Even though we met our initial goal, donations are still appreciated as more patients than ever are seeking medical attention. Nearly $9,000 was raised yesterday alone! Your prayers and donations have blessed the La Vida staff and the people of Ecuador. Thank you for your continued support!

In the News:

Saturday April 16, 2016 an earthquake of 7.8 magnitude hit Ecuador. It killed 602, wounded 12,492, and 132 people are still missing with the toll continuing to rise. The epicenter was in Muisne, a small city on the Pacific coast. So far there have been over 700 aftershocks -- one reaching a magnitude of 6.1 -- and more are expected. A state of emergency has been declared in six of Ecuador's 24 provinces. This is the biggest earthquake to hit the area since the1970’s.Thousands of buildings have been destroyed and many more are in danger of collapsing.

This is the road from the Fellers home in Crucita
to the La Vida clinic in Portoviejo.

The Fellers' Story:

Saturday night started with the friends and family of Foundation La Vida celebrating the long anticipated wedding of Dr. Enrique and his lovely bride. The outdoor ceremony was interrupted by the 7.8 magnitude earthquake that shook half of Ecuador. It’s nothing short of divine intervention that the wedding party was attended by the entire La Vida staff along with many other medical personnel. Everyone took shelter in Foundation La Vida  -- a structure built to California earthquake codes. The Fellers and staff are safe and offering medical care and safety in one of the city's few undamaged buildings.

La Vida is located in Portoviejo, Ecuador -- one of the most  affected areas. Media have said the city is flattened, and Dr. Fellers wrote, "It looks as if a bomb has exploded." Emergency services are struggling to reach many of Ecuador’s affected cities as roads and bridges are severely damaged and impassible in many areas. Emergency personnel from Samaritans Purse are mobilizing to help the Fellers with emergency relief as soon as possible.

Monday:
We’ve been at the clinic since the earthquake happened Saturday night. We're sleeping in the pre-op area, wearing scrubs and eating crackers. Like camping out! Thank goodness we have coffee.
A very nice doctor from Samaritan’s Purse arrived today. They are evaluating the situation in Portoviejo to see where best to be used. The epicenter is worse than here! I can’t imagine that. The city has lots of needs, so there are Samaritan’s Purse teams there are well. We are preparing for tomorrow --meetings, organizing, seeing patients, preparing for surgeries to come, etc. I am pretty exhausted! We wanted to let you know we appreciate your prayers and your thoughtfulness. Please pray for the people. So much pain.

Love,
Flor

Tuesday:
A medical team from Auburn, AL is in the process of traveling back to Ecuador to aid in disaster relief. Orthopedic surgeon Dr. Ron Hillyer and anesthesiologist Milton Pointer had just returned from Portoviejo when the earthquake hit. Dr. Hillyer and M.D. Pointer worked with Bayside Medical Mission and performed 42 surgeries over the course of just seven days. Now, they're heading back. This will be a huge relief as they will bring much needed medical supplies, renewed energy and a fresh perspective on the tragic situation.

Wednesday:
Dr. Hillyer and Dr. Milt M.D. from Auburn, AL arrived in Ecuador to help care for the hundreds of patients desperately needing medical attention. They came bearing much needed medical supplies.

The Fellers were finally able to return to their home in Crucita on Wednsday. Dr. Fellers updated, “The office staff beat us (home) and cleaned it up for us. Sweet and faithful bunch... genuine friends... Great homecoming as the electricity just came back on in Crucita. Great sleeping in our own bed!"

Thursday:
Today, we examined over 80 patients. We did 6 surgeries and start all over again tomorrow morning at 6:30am.

I wish there was a way to express what we are living right now, but it is impossible so I'm not going to try.

There is a weariness with so much work, but then there is a refreshing energy knowing that we are doing what God wants us to. People have so many horrendous stories and yet many people see God in all of this and know they are here for a purpose and are now looking for it. It is so fantastic to be a part of that, to pray with them and help them through the tragedy.
