Dear Friends

I hope this message finds you well and in good health.

Now that I have reached the 52-year milestone, I’ve been reflecting on the amazing and fulfilled life that I‘ve had so far. I feel privileged to have been blessed with so much, such as amazing family, friends and neighbours and as a result I want to celebrate both my 52nd birthday and my 27th year working in the developing world, in Africa and Asia, by walking from Waterford Bay to Galway Bay, to raise funds for three very worthy charities in Galway, Ireland and Africa. The walk will take place from the 17th of August to 24th of August and I am hoping for your support and generosity.

Starting out on this challenge - walking 350km in 8 days - I will head north west to Galway Bay via Waterford, Ardmore, Mount Mellary, Lismore, Cahir, Thurles, Roscrea,  Birr, Kilcormac, Tullamore, Clara, Moate, Athlone, Ballinasloe, Loughrea, Craughwell, Oranmore, Galway, The Claddagh and finishing in Salthill at Galway Bay.

Also, on Saturday, 24th of August at 4pm I’m inviting supporters to walk the final 5km with me, starting at Galway's Claddagh Hall and along the promenade of Salthill to kick the wall at the end of Salthill prom and back to CLADDAGH hall at 4pm.

Also I am inviting people . to support the 3 charities at a separate event that evening at 6.30pm on Saturday the 24th of August with a BBQ/Buffet in The Galway Bay Hotel with entry fee of €20 with all proceeds going to the charities.

My aim is to raise much-needed funds for  Self Help Africa  www.selfhelpafrica.org  Rosabel Rooms (In partnership with the Irish Hospice) https://hospicefoundation.ie/rosabels-rooms/ and  Galway Rape Crisis Centre  www.grcc.ie to help support women, men and children’s projects in Ireland and Africa and supporting their families and I will need all the support I can get. Here is how you can make a difference:

If you would like to support me, you can do so by making a donation or joining in with me on a section (or all!!) of my walk.

To put it in context....this is what your support means to the charities......

Self Help Africa.

€20 will pay for a flock of chickens for a struggling farm family

€50 will support a family with a vegetable garden

€70 will buy a bicycle – used to get children to school or crops to a market

€100 will provide a farm with the tools it needs to work their land effectively

€250 will allow us to supply an irrigation/water hand pump for a village

€500 will support various small projects in Africa

€1,000 will part-fund a grain store in Ethiopia

Rosabel Rooms . (In partnership with the Irish Hospice)

Rosabel’s Rooms in collaboration with The Irish Hospice Foundation, was launched on the 5th January 2018, on what would have been Rosabel’s 2nd birthday. The project is developing the following activities:

Through the Design & Dignity Programme at the Irish Hospice Foundation, this project is facilitating the development of family-friendly bereavement suites in hospital emergency departments around Ireland, which will provide comfort and dignity for families following the loss of a loved one.
The Rosabel’s Room-to-Heal fund is providing direct financial support to families, when a child dies in Ireland. The Fund is helping bereaved parents and families to take time off work, pay for funeral costs etc.
Over the coming paths, this project will work to ensure required therapeutic supports are made available for individuals impacted by child loss.

Galway Rape Crisis Centre

Galway Rape Crisis Centre are in real need of funds to provide counselling hours for clients from Galway and the West of Ireland who are currently on their waiting list. They have a demand for counselling services that exceeds their current capacity. This delay in providing counselling to those in need only adds to their stress. They will use the money raised from this event to provide counselling hours to both, their clients and their families / supporters.
