Vincentian Lay Missionary- Jimma, Ethiopia July 2019

*** Due to recent developments in Ethiopia, my program has moved sites to Jimma, Ethiopia the birthplace of coffee!

Where to start, I was recently accepted as a volunteer with the Vincentian Lay Missionaries (VLM), I will be travelling to Jimma, Ethiopia this upcoming July for a month long mission trip. I am honored and excited to serve the community within Jimma. Four other volunteers and myself will be living amongst and educating a community of children in Ethiopia. With a passion for volunteering, beginning in high school and extending into college, I am beyond humbled to be expand my service opportunity to Ethiopia.

Jimma is one of the many sites in the VLM program. The mission of VLM is to involve young adults in the ministry and service of St. Vincent de Paul. Vincentians believe in fostering systemic change and living in solidarity with the people they serve. As a individual, I believe all are worthy and deserving. I look forward to serving with dignity those within Jimma, fostering change within the world we live. While in Jimma, I will have the opportunity to live in community with The Daughters of Charity, I have heard they are some of the kindest ladies one will ever meet.

Since I was young, I have always had a passion for working with kids. I look forward to bringing my passion to Ethiopia. In Jimma, myself and a group of four others will facilitate a  summer camp for children in grades 1-6, many of whom face hardship in their communities and home life. I will specifically be teaching English and life skills in a new environment, different than my usual Wisconsin middle school students, a group of 2nd- 3rd grade Ethiopian children who spend their summer learning English. In Ethiopia, English is essential for the students to advance in society and reach higher education levels. Spending time this summer in Ethiopia will also give me new perspectives and experiences to bring back to my students in Wisconsin in the fall. Involving my current students, they will be writing notes to my students in Jimma. Upon my return to the U.S., I will have pictures/ notes from my students in Jimma to share with them next school year.

I want to invite you to be a part of my VLM story. I would be extremely grateful and humbled by any donations or prayers you would be willing to send my way. The funds will be used as a donation to the Daughters of Charity in order to fund their operations in Ethiopia and supplies for my students. All donations are tax-deductible and go directy to the Vincentian Lay Missionaries/ Daughters of Charity Ministries.

Thank you all in advance for your support. Please reach out if you have any questions or would like to hear more about the VLM & Jimma community.

Thanks Devan
