(Story in English below)

Piet and his wife Gerie are Dutch motorhome enthusiasts who live in Spain. After retiring, they invested all their life savings in a motorhome which they then spent 3 years equipping. They took out an insurance policy paying an annual premium of 916 euros. Their poor Spanish led them to believe that paying such a high premium would mean they were properly covered, but in the event, it turned out that despite paying such a sky-high price, they were not insured against fire and vandalism.

On the night of 5 May 2016, at about 11 p.m., after the Real Madrid-Manchester United match, Piet heard fireworks in the neighbourhood. Trusting that people would be considerate towards their neighbours, he went to bed. Towards 1.30 a.m., he was awoken by a noise. He looked out of the window to see his motorhome, his life’s dream and savings, completely engulfed in flames. Piet called 112, but by the time the firefighters arrived it was too late. Next day, Piet went to the police, who told him they wouldn’t be investigating anything. He called his insurance company, but they told him he had no right to any claim. He asked for the cause of the fire to be investigated; both his insurers and the police refused.

A week later, disappointed, defeated and despondent in his search for just a little help, Piet realised that neither his insurers nor the police were going to help him. Humiliated and dejected, Piet started to accept he had lost everything. He asked the insurance company to tow the vehicle away, but the insurance company refused to pay towing costs beyond 150 euros and intends to invoice him 384 euros to take it to the scrapyard. In other words, they sell you a policy for your motorhome weighing 4500 kg but in the event of a write-off, they only cover 150 euros of towing costs. You have to pay the rest yourself.

Piet is still in shock. Disillusioned and depressed, he is incapable of even starting to think about how to move forward.

That’s why we’re asking for your cooperation: to help Piet and Gerie recover from this terrible blow.

We think they would be happy if they could buy any old motorhome that would allow them to travel and feel the freedom, cruising the roads of Spain once more. At the age of 73, it's very difficult for them to start over, unless they get a little bit of help.

What happened to Piet could happen to any of us.
