Puerto Rico is a beautiful country but has one very critical and sad social issue: Their street and abandoned dogs.
We are Claudia & Alejandro, a regular couple who loves animals and can’t stand to see dogs suffering in the streets. We are actually from Colombia, but moved to PR 3 years ago. Since then, we adopted Milo at a local shelter, then we found Lala dying, we did not doubt to take her. Now she is our sweet baby girl and has been for us for almost 2 years now. 2 months ago we went to celebrate my birthday at a beautiful town called Isabella, there we found UMA in pretty bad conditions, not only physically but emotionally broke. There, we had the great pleasure to meet Deb and her husband Jim, they are truly dedicated animal lovers in Connecticut. We connected immediately and decided to save Uma's life.
Yesterday, while taking Milo, Lala and Uma for their regular morning walk (Before we go to work), we were followed by these two cuties you can see in the pictures. We kind of tried to avoid them, but the persisted and did not abandoned us until we reached the building we live in. They started "crying", they were hungry, thirsty and they wanted to go in. How can you ignore this? We sure could not. Even we knew we did not have the space (we live in a 2 bedroom apartment and have 3 dogs already) and we did not even have the funds to treat them, we immediately decided to open our house doors while we could figure something out.
We first tried the local shelter, their answer: we are full, we cannot take them. Their suggestion: Take them to another municipal shelter, what does it mean? They will put them to sleep. The euthanasia rate at these shelters is 99%. Most dogs do not even get 24 hours in the shelter - they are walked 'straight out back' to be euthanized
We reached Deb and Jim and they immediately said: Send them over here, we will take care of them until we find a forever home for them. This is why we are posting this go fund me. We need the funds to get them ready and to fly them for a second chance and to hopefully have the life they deserve. We need to prepare them physically for their trip and of course cover the airline expenses so they can meet Deb & Jim in CT to start the adoption process.
