On November 12, 2015, Astrid Katherine Sorensen graced us with her presence at 2:35 pm weighing 5lbs 9oz. Astrid never took her first breath because the Lord had called her home several days before she was born. She was described to me, “as one of the prettiest most perfect babies ever seen.” We may never know fully why God chose Dan and Jenn to walk this road and we may never be able to comprehend on this side of eternity why the Lord gives to some and takes away from others. Yet we are called as Christians to stand in faith just as Dan and Jenn do today that the Lord is good and we will trust him even when we cannot see past our darkest hour.
Astrid was a miracle baby, after years of struggling to conceive those double pink lines appeared! And I could only imagine the overflowing of joy in Dan and Jenn's heart. It seems unfair, yet I encourage you to sit back and watch as God uses this tragedy to bring beauty from ashes. Their testimony is an inspiration to us all and so I want to share with you just a glimpse of Dan and Jenn's endurance and faith seen through the eyes of a few dear friends who have witnessed this couples strength in the valley.
“Jenn is one of my best friends and a great example of a godly woman. We walked closely with their family through this trial and saw their faith prevail. Jenn and Dan were both a light to those around them during a dark time. When many others would crumble and question why or how God could do this, they gave Him glory. My husband and I had the honor to meet and hold Astrid. Their daughter was one of the prettiest and most perfect babies I have ever seen. I told Jenn that she was so perfect Jesus wanted her with Him in heaven. They have peace knowing they will be with Astrid again one day but the road ahead will be tough and filled with a lot of grieving. I pray that they have peace and comfort in Astrid's beauty and knowing she is in a much better place.” - Eve Adams
“This process has been long and very emotional, but the Sorensen's have demonstrated incredible faith and grace through it all. They never once complained or blamed God and that alone spoke volumes. Jenn was, as I told her several times throughout labor and then following delivery, 'the most fierce warrior I have ever seen'. It was such an honor to serve as their doula and I am better for knowing them. They are incredible people, and my heart is deeply broken for them in this time of loss. Astrid was so beautiful.” - Kim Reynolds
Astrid's passing is not in vain. The Lord will use this tragedy to breathe hope back into the hopeless and produce thankfulness to those who have forgotten its meaning. How can this be, you say? Well it only seems appropriate to quote Jenn when asked how she is dealing with the pain while preparing to give birth to her heavenly baby. She said, “I am trying to remember that the same power that conquered the grave is in me and so I can face this because this how the Lord has ordered my steps.”
This is the type of faith I pray for daily. The kind of faith that can see the outcome is bleak yet still trust the sovereignty of God. So today I am thankful for this couple, because they have reminded me the kind of faith I must strive for. I am thankful for the life of baby Astrid because she has left a mark of beauty in this ugly world.
As Eve Adams said, this road ahead will not be easy for the Sorensens and if we are able to lift even the smallest of burdens off their shoulders I know it would mean the world to them. Our hearts long to ease the pain they are facing daily and the expenses that go along with a loss can add up quickly and weigh heavily on a grieving family. We only ask for donations if you are in a situation were you are able to help.
