My name is Arama Christiana. I am an author and actress. I grew up in Freetown, Sierra Leone and attended The Methodist Girls High School and St. Joseph's Convent. I currently reside in North Carolina with my family. My first book, The Children of Sierra Leone was published by Richard C. Owens Publishers. I'm currently working on self-publishing my second children's book, When Freedom Came.

When Freedom Came is a chapter book that carries a montage sequence - where the narrator, nine-year-old Boshigo, is looking at the current result of freedom from the lens of 3 generations (her, her mother and her grandmother). When her Gran'mama went blind, Boshigoi became her eyes; and for years, her Gran'mama spoke of Freedom as if she were an old friend of the people of South Africa. Boshigo shares the fear and anticipation, and the joy she feels as she helps her 96-year-old grandmother vote for the first time in South Africa. Boshigo has helped to make history, but more importantly, she was there the day when Freedom came to her people in South Africa.

So the story has been written, I've had two different editors review for 1) historical facts and accuracy, and 2) grammar, spelling, consistency of voice, etc.  So what do I do in the meantime while the illustrations are in progress?  Raise funds to publish, When Freedom Came. Here is the breakdown of funds to make it all happen:

Consultancy Fees - $150
Illustrator Fees - $600
Cost of Marketing Materials -  $500
Website Revamp - $200
Cost of Producing Audio Book - $600
Cost of Using - $50

For every donation of $20 and above, you will receive an autographed, When Freedom Came book.

My goal is to have the funds raised by mid-March 2015!

Any amount of funds would be greatly appreciated to help me reach my goal.

Stay Blessed Always,

Live From Amazon and Kindle: When Freedom Came!

Thanks SO much to everyone who has been so supporting and encouraging. This is SO exciting, but alas, When Freedom Came is now on Amazon and Kindle. They went live on May 29th, 2015. Yet I wouldn't have done it without being accountable to you all and to my team of editors, illustrators, social strategist and to Amazon and Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP).

There was a lot to learn and a lot of decisions to be made, but in the end, we did it. I will be sharing a lot of what I've learned from this self-publishing journey as well as the decisions I made and why. Also, as I embark on my next project, I'm looking to see what worked with this first project and what changes need to be in place for improvement.

One final decision was in how to market the books to readers, and below is how readers can purchase or access the print and ebook:

the ebook will be available for free to Amazon's Kindle Unlimited members for the next 90 days via the KDP Select program
the ebook is $7.99 to someone who is not a member of Amazon's Kindle Unlimited
the print book is $9.99
if someone wants the print version + the ebook version, then the ebook will be sold for $2.99 (per Amazon's Match program)
That said, if you're interested in the ebook, I will be doing a free promotion in the next day or two via Kindle.

Happy Reading, but remember: When you purchase, download and read the book, please don't forget to leave your review on Amazon or Kindle.

Once again, thanks for going along with me on this journey and for your support and allowing me to be accountable to you.

Stay Blessed,
~Arama Christiana
Stay tuned for more information on how to get a FREE read of the ebook.

Which Book Cover Art Do You Like?

OK. So here you are, helping us decide the cover for the book, When Freedom Came. First, I need to clarify something from yesterday's post. The cover art is the same, but the font on the two images below are different. We would like to know which one you like the best and why. Kindly go over to www.aramaproducts.blogspot.com and tell us. We would love to hear from you.

We're finally there! We can't stop now. We have to Go! Go! Go!!

So this is the home stretch people! All the illustrations are done; learning activities in place, non-fiction facts in place, etc., and getting ready to undergo one final edit. What we're doing now is putting it all together.

If any of you have self published, especially via CreateSpace [CS] (as they are the only POD I've dealt with), then you know the headaches of formatting and making sure to follow publishing requirements. One may find answers within the CS community and research online, but do not expect to find any assistance from the CS support staff, unless you are willing to pay their fees.

So here's what's left of this final phase:

1. Ensure the illustrations, body text, learning activities, the front matter and back matter are exactly where we want and that they are in accordance with CS recommendations and requirements.
2. Generate a PDF file of the book and do a test through CS' Interior Reviewer
3. Implement/correct any formatting and/or style errors indicated by the Interior Reviewer
4. Submit to CS for their review and await feedback
5. Implement feedback from CS and return updated proof to CS
6. Give the greenlight, and
7. VOILA! We're published!

Stay Tuned! We have one more decision we would like you to assist us with: - Help us decide the final cover art. Please look out for the next blog at http://aramaproducts.blogspot.com/ within the next 24 hrs for the posting of the two cover arts and let us know your decision.

Also, if you have not had the opportunity to help us with this project as of yet, kindly make a donation today.

Stay Blessed,

We are so close to having the work done, and yet still, we must wait to ensure that all the different parts come together perfectly for a great reading and historical experience.

Illustrations: - While 98% of the illustrations are done, after reviewing the interior of the book, my wonderful illustrator, Sky, and I agreed that we needed to add a couple more illustrations.

1. Since the book opened with a scene with tension, we decided to add an illustration of the narrator as a soft opening.
2. Originally, we were not going to have illustrations for chapter 6, as we did not want to call attention to the trouble makers at the polls and distract from the story of the book. However, while flipping through the pages, it just seemed odd to not have pictures there when pre and post chapters do.
3. In our first conversation, Sky had informed me that it would be best to do all the interior illustrations before deciding on the cover picture. Well, even though I had decided on a cover picture after discussions and confirmation of the interior pictures, once Sky delivered the finished work of the interior pictures, I really fell in love with the illustration for Chapter 5, even though Sky had already done the cover picture. Thankfully, Sky was willing to go back to the drawing board and create a colorful version of the Chapter 5 picture. So, the new cover is under construction.

Editing & Formatting: - Although I’ve had friends and beta readers go through the book, it is undergoing final edits and formatting. If anyone has published a book through CreateSpace or other publish-on-demand printers, you know it is quite an undertaking formatting your book for publishing. The page layout, margins, gutter, headers and footers all need to be in place before the book can be printed.

Learning Activities: - Currently developing discussion topics and activities that would lend well to lesson plans for teachers and parents.

Once all the above are in place, hopefully within the next week, then we can send off our final product in PDF for CreateSpace to test and give feedback. If all goes well and we are satisfied with the proof from CreateSpace, then we will give them the green light to finalize the product and our masterpiece will finally be available to all.

Thanks for all your support!
