Abby's Peace Officer Society

Abby's Peace Officer Society is a non-profit entity that is set up to reward officers who deserve an A+ for their efforts of serving and protecting their communities. It is our hope that positive recognition might keep instances like the one we endured from happening to others, and give people respect for police officers again.

In the early hours of the morning on January 31, 2012 my husband and I were on our way to the hospital to give birth to our second child, Abby.  On our way there we were stopped by 2 police officers from the Hebron, Indiana police department at gunpoint because of the kind of car we were driving.  They detained us on the side of the road, while I was in labor, for approximately 20 minutes before finally taking my husband to jail and sending me off in an ambulance to the hospital.  The arresting officer lied and said we were speeding and running from them on the only police report filed that night.  The officers on the scene used vulgar language at us and did everything in their power to get my husband to fight with them so they could justify arresting him.  He did not fight or resist in any way, yet they continually berated him and threatened him with bodily harm.  They disregarded me all together and waited about 15 to 20 minutes to call an ambulance to take me to the hospital even though they immediately knew I was in active labor and my water had broken.  They acted with complete indifference to my baby's and my health, safety and wellbeing while being completely malicious and callous to my husband.  We did nothing wrong, did not break any laws, and were only treated that way because the arresting officer "wanted to get stupid".  Our daughter, Abby, was born within minutes of arriving at the hospital with her umbilical cord wrapped around her neck twice.  The police dash cameras recorded the entire incident.  My husband was arrested and the charges were dropped the next day, but he missed the birth of his daughter.  We hope both officers learned their lesson from this experience, not to treat innocent people in this manner, as both are still working today for different police departments.  We did not seek recognition for our case in the media, but did try it in civil court.  http://www.nwitimes.com/news/local/lake/cops-deprived-good-man-of-first-moments-with-daughter-wife/article_201561ff-6c00-56c6-9f4b-b4521eb09ba7.html

It is important to us that something like this not happen to anyone else.  It is equally important to us that the general public knows that there are good police working today.  Police in this country used to be called Peace Officers, and their duty was to serve and protect their communities.  There have been far too many instances of "bad police" in the media.  We would like to change the national conversation from focusing on "bad cops" to focusing on exceptional officers.

We are currently accepting submissions for reward recipients via email at [email redacted].  The goal is to give a monetary award to both the selected officers who deserve the reward and the departments for which they work for use as they see fit.  The more money we raise, the more officers we can reward.  The non-profit nature of our organization means your contributions are tax deductible.  Together we can help promote the values of Peace Officers and the need for them to serve and protect our communities.
