The Alaska Native News is an Alaska Native-operated non-profit online news portal dedicated to educating and informing rural Alaskans, bringing them information and opportunities otherwise not available to them in Alaska’s rural areas.
While ANN works to write and aggregate news from around the world, nation, and state as well as in other categories, ANN is determined to work with the rural communities gathering information from local rural writers, publicizing local rural artists and bringing those communities closer together and closer to areas not traditionally available to them, as well as stimulate their local economies.
Although we have been providing news to Alaskans for five years, we are a relatively new non-profit organization, and so, we have yet to find funding sources to expand our organization, or take on this project on our own. While our writing staff works dilligently and they volunteer all of their time, ANN wants to be able to provide budding rural writers with at least some income for their work, in order to help them, and their local community's economies.
We also find that in order to help local artists and craftsman plying their traditional crafts, we need to expand our business model to accomadate the larger workload that will come with providing those services. While we will eventually find funding through traditional means, we find that that avenue is not yet available to us.
While many non-profits hire a for-profit to raise money for campaigns such as this, almost half of the funds raised go to that company for their fundraising efforts. We want the money raised to go towards this project and these goals, this is the reason why we chose the GoFundMe venue to assist in raising funds for our Rural Project.
