Help us Save the Funk Zone Pool!

We believe in the power of the pool... do you?

As an aquatic physical therapist, I saw miracles happen on a regular basis. It's so rewarding to see wheelchair-users walk independently; to help someone in severe pain have a few hours without discomfort; to show patients that physical therapy can be fun, doesn't have to hurt, and can still be very effective. The healing power of water is quite amazing, and I spent most of my 17-year PT career in the pool.

I now need YOUR help to achieve a miracle.

My employer closed our warm-water pool in the heart of the Funk Zone (perhaps you remember it as the Diver's Den? Anacapa Dive Center? Muller Aquatic Center?) in October. My husband (Travis, the Aquatic Director) and I lost our jobs, but even more importantly, our community lost a valuable resource for water exercise.

With close to 25 years of combined experience in the aquatics business, you will be hard-pressed to find two Santa Barbara residents who are more passionate about water fitness & rehab than Travis and me. It's that passion that fueled us as we worked feverishly to figure out how to save the pool. We knew our community needs MORE access to aquatic personal training, water fitness classes, and aquatic physical therapy... not less.

We weren't expecting to start our own aquatics business right now, let alone do it in just eight weeks, but miraculously, we figured out all of the logistics to reopen the pool in November 2023. However, our start-up costs were high, and the building is old, rundown, and in need of a lot of repairs.... which is why we're reaching out to you.

Our initial start-up costs totaled over $25,000, and we're expecting to pay another $25,000+ in repairs. We are looking to our community for help. Your donations will assist with these expenses so that we can continue to share the power of the pool & improve the health and well-being of our local residents.

Your donation dollars will help to pay for:
  • Rent, security deposit, and utilities
  • Liability insurance
  • LLC & professional corporation fees
  • Business licenses & health permits
  • Legal fees
  • CPA & bookkeeper fees
  • Building inspection fees
  • Software subscriptions
  • Website development
  • Cleaning supplies
  • Internet/phone (installation, monthly fees)
  • Signage
  • Pool maintenance: reverse osmosis ($2000), filter repairs ($2000), new pool cover ($300), new underwater pool light ($800)
  • Other repairs: replace drywall, paint, replace the pool fence & ramp, fix the exterior awning, replace a shower stall, add grab bars/hooks, replace baseboards, replace broken chairs & storage cabinets, various bathroom projects, and improve accessibility (total: $20,000+)

We recognize that not everyone is in a position to provide financial assistance, nor may you want to. Here are some other ways that you can support our small business:
  • Join us for water fitness classes, aquatic personal training, or open pool. More information can be found on our website.
  • SHARE THIS FUNDRAISER by forwarding the link to friends. We believe in the power of crowdfunding! And every dollar counts... really!
  • Talk to your friends, family, doctors, and neighbors & let them know that the Anacapa Street pool is still open! Be sure to share stories about how beneficial the water has been for you.
  • If you are (or know of) a contractor that can assist with building repairs, or if you have some other skillset that may be valuable (marketing, bookkeeping, web design, etc), please get in touch.
  • Interested in volunteering? Maybe you (or a responsible teen or college student you know) would like to help with some administrative work.

We've heard your stories, so we know the Diver's Den pool is practically a public landmark: it's where you learned to dive, your kids took swim lessons, and you rehab'ed after your back surgery. It's the place where you (finally!) found a form of exercise that you enjoyed. It's where you created friendships that will last a lifetime.

Help us SAVE THE POOL so that we can share our expertise & passion to create a healthier, happier community.

Thank you!
