Allison Carter became apart of Spark the Way's community in July 2015. When I first had the chance to talk to her on the phone and hear her story, I was amazed. Through her past battle with cancer and current battle of the aftermath of cancer, I could hear her smile throughout her story telling. "My Name is Allison and I am 31 years old. I first faced cancer at the age of 18 when I was diagnosed with Acute Promyelocytic Leukemia. I spent 94 days in the hospital getting treatment by chemotherapy and other antibiotics to make sure that I was stable enough to go home and continue my college education. At the time, I didn't know that the chemotherapy was weakening my bones and my bone marrow was not being regenerated as fast as it should be should be or could be like in a normal person. I would learn this in time as I took a major fall in April 2015.
On April 4, 2015, I was running a half-marathon to help raise money for autism awareness month because I am a classroom teacher in a special needs classroom. I wiped out on the 8th mile on the 13.1 mile course. I ended up finishing the race but I did major damage to my left leg and knee.
I went to the orthopedic doctor on April 5th and he took X-rays and he said I needed surgery ASAP. I waited until school was out and that was a fitting decision for my family at the time.
On June 22, 2015 I entered Gulf Coast Hospital for my surgery and my White Blood Cell counts were slightly elevated. They were at the range of 13.6 when they should be below a 10. The surgeon decided to operate anyways and did the patella realignment and repair surgery thinking it would be safe as long as I was on heavy antibiotics afterwards.
After I was moved to recovery, I met with a different doctor who happened to be with infectious disease control and they informed me that I had a serious staph infection and that if I couldn't get it under control it could be seriously life threatening.
Since that day in the hospital on June 22, 2015 and when I was discharged on June 24th, 2015, I have been on antibiotics and it has been nonstop pain and I am unable to work or provide for my family or pay for my bills that provide my transportation and my insurance for my car. I also have my medication and food expense to worry about along with my gasoline for my car to get to appointments.
I am waiting for my health insurance to authorize my move to another hospital to treat my staph infection in my muscle tissue in my surgery site so that I won't have to face limb amputation. This has been really hard on me but I am definitely hanging in there. Anything will help. Thank you and God Bless!
