Riverside Trailer Park Eviction

Donación protegida
All 19 families wrongfully evicted from Riverside Trailer Park in Squamish effective Sept 2017!

Please help with the legal costs involved in fighting this injustice. You can make anonymous donations as well as personalized.

In 2010 Squamish Nation discovered that part of Riverside Trailer Park was being operated on a piece of property outside of the residential lot owned (by Cert. Of Possession) by the native family operating the park.

Not only did the owner of the park not have a lease to operate a trailer park, the boundaries of the park have been expanded beyond his lot and onto general Reserve Land.

Since then, nineteen families have been living in fear of losing their homes when the Squamish Nation said in 2012 that we were trespassing on their land and were served notice of eviction effective Sept 2017.

We were held hostage for 5 years, unable to sell our homes without written leases from the Squamish Nation, but every effort to discover why they wouldn’t provide those leases was rejected.

Meanwhile, the cost of affordable homes has skyrocketed and are no longer affordable for us.

We approached all levels of government for help, including Pamela Goldsmith MP, Jordan Sturdy MLA, and Mayor Heintzman of Squamish . They have all told us it's a legal matter .

We believe that we will be able to secure the best lawyer in Canada to handle this case.

We will need $15,000 to start legal action. To obtain a detailed legal opinion.

Here are the facts.
We were lied to by the Landlord and Manager of Riverside Trailer Park when:

-we purchased our trailers and were told that Riverside was a Registered Manufactured Home Park.

-we signed Tenancy Agreements that were on BC Tenancy Agreement forms that were invalid

-the lease agreements we took to our banks to obtain mortgages weren’t valid because the owner had no lease, but BC Assessment, the banks, the real estate agents and the lawyers were unaware of this

-we were told that the extra fees demanded by the landlord along with a 37% rent increase in early 2012 was “to replace the septic system with a city sewer connection”

We have explored all our other options. We offered to fund the infrastructure upgrades to keep the park open (denied by Squamish Nation). There are no other trailer parks with empty pads; and most won’t accept a trailer older than 10 years. We asked the District about rezoning a small parcel of land in the Upper Squamish from the Agricultural land Reserve (denied). Owners of one park in Squamish offered to add 10 new lots to their existing park but met too much resistance from the District so they retired the offer. We asked the Mayor to request a meeting with Squamish Nation about a portion of Reserve Land being developed in Brackendale by the Squamish Nation (denied).

Rent and house prices are outrageous in Squamish, leaving us little option but to move out of our community, quitting work and leaving family and friends behind.

For all who invested their savings and have lost it, the young families forced to remove their children from their schools, for the retired and those on disability on a fixed income forced from their homes, and for those approaching the end of their working life this is unacceptable. We accept that we will have to move from the park. But we should, at the very least, receive fair market value for leaving.

Please consider making a small donation to help us secure the best lawyers in Canada to find the truth, to right the wrongdoing and to keep us in the community of Squamish where we all belong.

Thank you for taking the time to read our plea.

If you cannot help us financially, we understand, and we ask that you forward this to as many people as you can to help spread the news about the terrible position we find ourselves in.
