Cameroon Albinism Awareness support

"We are tired of being marginalised and being taken advantage of my daughter, maybe it is because we are albinos and many of those in our organisation are not very educated"

When Mama Wafo told me this, I made a promise to support her organisation in two ways; One is to set up a proper structure to continuously help raise awareness on albinism and the other to financially contribute to help them set up a sustainable food processing business to carry on their community activities.

Albinism is a genetic condition where people are born without the usual pigment (colour) in their bodies. Their bodies aren't able to make a normal amount of melanin, the chemical that is responsible for eye, skin, and hair colour. So most people with albinism have very pale skin, hair, and eyes. the United Nations officially recognised International Albinism Awareness Day as a global event since 2015, following a resolution adopted by its General Assembly in 2014.

In some parts of Cameroon, albinism is regarded as witchcraft and some communities kill albinos simply because they do not want ill luck to befall them. This has caused a lot of people living with albinism to withdraw from many things and to be disadvantaged at all time. Most of them, to not have top skills to integrate into society because gaining adequate education is also rare as many albinos drop of school before they get to higher education. This is due to the numerous challenges they face and the daily abuses they get just for being an albino. Most albinos live in isolation because people with albinism are usually used for rituals. while some people believe their body parts are said to bring good fortune, others believe sleeping with an albino child or woman can cure all sort of disease such as HIV/Aids and thus use this as a reason to rape or abuse them.

Our GOFUNDME CAMPAIGN is very timely because as we plan to celebrate the International Albinism Awareness Day in June. We are planning a series of campaigns and events to help this community. The UN theme for this year is 'Let their light shine across the world" We will like to use this year to intensify the campaigns we have had in the last few years, grow from living one day at a time and set up a strong sustainable business to help fund awareness activities and even sponsor child living with albinism, whose parents can not afford.

International Albinism Day program

-A one day conference to discuss issues affecting albinos and why they find it hard to fully integrate into the society
-Eye testing with eye specialists to distribute eyeglasses for those in need
-Mr and Mrs Albino to help in raising positive self-esteem
-A fundraising gala night to help raise funds
- Gift presentation to those from a very disadvantaged background.

Post International Albinism Day
-To build a clean space for their food processing business
- A machine that can transform Corn into a local meal called PAP  and usually consumed by everyone in Cameroon -Especially children
-To shoot a short film, telling their stories and pushing this through an online campaign to help people know
Community ‘sensitisation’ workshops to educate others to understand their deficiencies and process to use when and where necessary.

We would like to thank you very much for your support. Your contribution will go a long way to support this underprivileged community and we hope with your kind gesture, we can help shine their lights to the world.
