Who we are
@uxilia is a non-partisan association that carries out voluntary activities in the field of social-welfare, education, health, and the protection and promotion of human rights, mainly through the voluntary and free services of its members.

We are active in Syria at the AL HIKMA SCHOOL since 2015.

Main Goals and Specific Objectives of the project

Main Goals:
Improve the socio-economic conditions of the off-hand refugee community of Atma in Syria. Also, the long-term goal of the project is to promote the development and the autonomy of the camp, which is expanding by the day, currently counting around 75,000 people. Make the community self-sustainable and interactive respect to the surrounding villages in order to restore decent living conditions for the target population.

Specific Objectives:
Social and psychological recovery of 500 children of the Atma camp and of 10 teachers, including the vocational rehabilitation of the latter.
In a second time, we aim at increasing the number of the children beneficiaries, from 500 to 1000

The Rationale of the Project
The state of psychological and mental health of children victims of the conflict is particularly problematic having them suffered daily violence, experienced the death of parents, relatives or friends, endured forced evacuations, abuses, malnutrition in addition to early school leaving. Since the conflict began, more than 4,000 schools have been turned into shelters for storage and warehouses of humanitarian aid.
According to UNICEF, 2.8 million children have dropped out of education (UNICEF: Infographic: Syrian Children Under Siege, March 2014). Most teachers express severe difficulties in taking care of the children, mainly because of overcrowding (more than 40 pupils per class) and because of behavioral disorders in children coming from war zones.
Children are the most vulnerable victims of conflicts. Their experience makes them significantly more at risk of getting involved in criminal organizations or of expressing their traumas with violent and conflicting attitudes. Eventually, all this easily leads to depression and post-traumatic stress disorders (PTSD) amongst the youngest. It is therefore imperative to intervene with initiatives to promote children's education by offering safe spaces where they can resume their studies interrupted by the conflict.
Reintegration into a proper school system will help the kids to commit to healthy and appropriate daily activities as well as to renew their hope for a better future, thanks also to the support of the teachers, whose figure is fundamental to the civic and social education of the child and whose requalification is a “must” for the professionals working within a refugee camp.

Direct and Indirect Beneficiaries

Direct Beneficiaries:
500 children aged between 6 and 12 years old and 10 teachers working in the camp. Funds permitting, the number of children will be increased to 1,000 through the organization of a second school shift.

Indirect Beneficiaries:
The children’s families
The children and teachers’ local communities at large

Expected Results

This project will entail:
restructuring of the existing school structure and its expansion if increasing room demand
increase in the level of education of the children of Atma, who will be removed from the streets and directed to more appropriate activities for their age
doubling the time of opening of the school resulting in a doubling of the number of children attending classes thanks to morning and afternoon shifts

Main Activities
- Renovation and expansion of the buildings
- Refurbishment of the classrooms through improved heating system and addition of desks and chairs in accordance with the number of pupils
- Purchase of text books
- Purchase of teaching material

- Programming of a double-shift work in order to accommodate the schooling of 1,000 pupils

Monitoring and Evaluation
Monitoring data collection and evaluation we will be carried out by MF and @uxilia through periodic technical reports which will include general and specific indicators for each activity. MF will put in place an evaluation program, which will be conducted all along the project through regular on-site missions and which will be based on a monitoring of the children school achievements. An ex post evaluation will also be carried out at the end of the project.

The objectives achieved will be published by MF and @uxilia both whilst the activities are ongoing and at their completion though a series of events that will publicize the results of the project as well as other initiatives of solidarity carried out by these organizations in Syria.
