Aid for Venezuela

$9,206 of $20,000 goal

My name is Valerie.  I am a thirty-year-old Venezuelan native who moved to Houston, Texas, when I was a teenager. My entire extended family, as well as countless other friends and their families, lives in Venezuela. With the immense help from my mom, Mina, we are raising funds to help the people of Venezuela, who are in the middle of a crisis.

Venezuela has been in the news for the last few months because of its collapsing economy.  I’m sure many of you have seen on TV or read about the empty grocery stores, long queues to buy basic food necessities, and hospitals without medicine and supplies. According to reports by CBS, “The average Venezuelan shopper spends 35 hours waiting to buy subsidized goods each month” and “more than two dozen people were killed in line in the past 12 months, including a 4-year-old girl caught in gang crossfire and an 80-year-old woman crushed to death when an orderly line of shoppers suddenly turned into a mob of looters.”

Food shortages, rampant inflation and a worthless currency have made it difficult, if not impossible, for the average Venezuelan to afford basic food. According to reports by Reuters, the minimum monthly wage in Venezuela is only $20, about 20% of the cost of feeding a family of five for a month. And this situation is not limited to the poor; it is estimated that 90% of the population of Venezuela cannot afford to buy food.

The result is that thousands of Venezuelans are malnourished and facing starvation because they only have enough food for one meal a day or because they must ration food for their children.  This is an appalling humanitarian crisis, and help is crucial to saving lives. But international aid agencies and charities have been ineffective because the government will not officially admit that a food crisis exists, so it refuses all offers of aid. Without assistance, according to news reports, the situation will become more extreme in 2017-2018, with no sign of improving.

Since June of 2016, therefore, my mom has packaged boxes with food and medicine to ship to people in need. She works with a shipping company called Mi Carga who ships and distributes the boxes to families all over Venezuela.  But now we need YOUR HELP to send more boxes to other families in need.

Won’t you please help us?  No matter how small the donation, every little bit helps. The money will be used to buy basic non-perishable food and to pay the cost of shipping. The food will be shipped directly to individuals, churches and some charities in the country who need the food, not to government officials.  That way the shipments are sure to go to the people.

We thank you for your help and support to aid so many families in need.
