What is the House of Humanity?

House of Humanity 2.0 is an Aid Distribution & PsychoSocial Therapy Center that provides a range of services to refugees trapped on the island of Lesvos.

Our main focus is delivering aid in a way that enhances human dignity, well being and freedom of choice.

In a world where people have no choice but to flee their homes, and no choice but to put their kids on a dingy, and no choice but to live in a camp on a island - sometimes in a flimsy tent that doesn't even protect their children from the elements.... Being able to CHOOSE means everything!

We do this by providing vital aid with a ‘shopping’ style method of aid through our free food supermarket, which is run on a points system, and free clothing boutique where individuals can shop for the items they want and need.

We not only provide the basic humanitarian aid absolutely essential for their survival, we help them to forget - even if it's only for a while - that they are refugees trapped in a camp. Our guests ALWAYS leave our center with ear to ear smiles on their face!

Feed a refugee. Clothe a refugee. Heal a refugee.

House of Humanity: Facts and Figures

~ Between September and December 2017 we gave out a staggering 785,570 points in our free food supermarket. We also gave away an extra 320,000 points in free hygiene items.

~ Single adults and kids over 14 receive 150 points per shop; pregnant women and unaccompanied minors receive 200 points each; and children 18 months to 14 years are given 50 points. A family of 7 accumulate 700-750 points for their shopping session.

All families with infants and toddlers are given free baby products like milk, diapers, baby wipes, etc as we don’t want families to have to choose between food and baby care items.

We also prepare new families with baby beds and newborn kits, as well as strollers when available!

~ In our clothing shop, we have distributed over 380’000 single clothing items in the last 4 months.

~  New refugees to the island are scheduled by the camp to visit our center within 1-2 months of their arrival to the island. Almost all have lost most of their belongings to their journey and the 2 sets of clothes they get from the center are among their first belongings from their "new" life.

~ Through our ‘Network Aid’ project we have shared around 60 van loads of aid with other groups and NGO’s on the island.

                                                                                      WHY do we NEED Funds?!

House of Humanity is entirely a grassroots initiative, run by and for refugees, with the support of international independent volunteers. We are entirely dependent on crowdfunding to keep the doors open...

Whether it's stocking our supermarket shelves with groceries, buying underwear or socks for the clothing boutique, or filling our van with gas so we can transport refugees to the center.... The funds being raised are to make sure the House of Humanity continues to provide the basic essentials refugees need.

WHO are We?! My husband, Rafat, and I have been volunteering with refugees since we started pulling in boats on the coasts of Lesvos in December 2015. Our humanitarian efforts started with the purchase of ferry tickets and financial assistance to vulnerable cases. After forming Humans 4 Humanity, we slowly evolved into large scale distribution of humanitarian aid to refugees in camps.

Watch how Rafat and I got our start in the refugee crisis...

We established the first House of Humanity in March of 2017 and although the concept was a success, we needed to find something more affordable and that is the House of Humanity 2.0 was born!

Since founding the House of Humanity in 2017, we have served over 25,000 refugees providing their food, hygiene, clothing, and baby needs.
